sorry for the bad english^^

hi there!

we know since battlefield 3 that all people love details.

i mean:
- asteroids brake and not disappear
- rockets hit the hull or the shield of a ship and not explode in a ship
- shield effects if something hit the ship
- mining drones look at the asteroid if they mining
- warp effects if ships warp trough a station
- maybe little effects at wormholes they show how long the wormhole is open

EDIT:
- maybe fields/places they have radioactivity or scanner dampner

i know at a big battle this effects are not good for the performance^^.. maybe they are disabled if playernumber>500 in a sector

Waaaay too much to implement, lag will go through the roof.

Comparing the performance hit of details like that in a game with relatively low numbers of players in a small environment to a game like Eve with 30-35k people online in 7500 star systems at any given time is a bad comparison. Details like that sound nice, but their performance impact would be large and there would be little to no real benefit from them.

So, it sounds nice at first glance, but I don't think the performance hit would be worth the minimal improvement to visuals (and negligible improvement to gameplay) that this idea would provide.

Hmm, I don't think any of these ideas would cause lag since they could be implemented with information the client already has. Some of them would be a lot of work for negligible gain though, for example the one on the direction drones are facing. I can hardly even see ships in game, let alone drones. I suppose miners may be paying slightly more attention to graphics than I do though, for me (graphically at least) Eve is just a battle of the purple squares vs. the red squares.

Anyway enabling the warp tunnel effect, or a slightly modified version, for stations doesn't seem to unreasonable. Nor does adding some kind of effect to deteriorating worm holes, maybe make them pulsate, and add some lightning style flashes as they get nearer collapse?

Creating realistic clipping for rocket explosions is probably going to be pushing Eve's engine beyond it's limitations though, it is a 10 year old game after all. Maybe they can look at stuff like that in a few years if they ever give the graphics engine a major overhaul.

maybe.. turrets really hit the shiphull and not the center of a ship.
the problem is the calculation of the explosion that goes arround the ship

and shield effects are easy.. a simple way are the booster effects.. the nice way is a transparent ship hull that are a little bigger than the ship that have this effect..

at the broken asteroids are no problems with the performance.. the server have no work with that..only the client.. and i didnt see anytime that are 1000 asteroids broke at the same time^^..

Here is the easy way to explain this. You want a shield effect that isn't simple, I.E. I shoot at you, my client sends it to the server in a one tick space, then in the very next tick the server determines (based on your transversal or orbital speed, falloff distances, and my skills) wether or not that shot hits you. Then in the next tick the server tells your client I shot you.

All of this in addition to everything else that the client has to do. Such as managing an already immensely lag inducing information load. The fact is that you can't just implement these changes on the server side or client side, because it requires that the information be sent between two clients, and when anything goes from one player client to another, the server must always vet the information and determine what is right and wrong. Honestly they are great ideas, and many of us would love to see them, hell I want a rocket effect where all rockets fire with an extremely short ROF bell out from the point of origin and focus back in on the target and have a much higher reload time (kinda like the rockets on Gundam Wing). But the reality is that you can't just add detail to a game like eve without undue effects on other parts of gameplay.

Should CCP ever shut the game down temporarily for a major revamping of the game engine and updating of the server, THAT would be the time to submit these ideas.
