You cannot control how people perceive you, and ultimately negative judgement may be the end verdict. I get hassled a lot for playing eve. Even by the eve community. I enjoy the game - I enjoy aspects of the game but it doesn't matter. In "real"-life it's important to be honest to yourself and when necessary to others. Some people around you don't need to know your personal life - or what you do. It's not hard to keep it separate. My family and close friends know what I do online, and support me, but if I'm going into a job interview, or meeting someone new the first thing out of my mouth isn't "I make stupid internet videos and play a hardcore space pirate game :D" But I also don't tell people I have a cat right away, or that I enjoy ridiculously difficult puzzle games, or that I still wet the bed. It's all about Relevance.

Just because one doesn't flaunt their hobbies, it doesn't mean they are living a secret life.

Depends on the audience you're talking to. Someone who's a total sport freak probably wouldn't be interested. I'm a programmer so most of the people I surround myself with are interested, and talking about leadership qualities from games can be a huge plus to employers looking for people like me. They already know I'm a "geek", so chances are I'm also a gamer.

For me, i tend to avoid talking about eve around people that don't play it. For one, they don't have a clue what you are talking about, and quickly get that glazed-eye'd look of compete boredom. Plus i tend to find that eve is complicated enough to allow you to talk for hours and hours regarding it. That, and you might as well strap a big flashing neon arrow sign above your head, pointing down, reading "GEEK" or "NERD". Lol

As far as hiding it, i do this to a degree from my wife, who would otherwise scream at me endlessly because of my activity. She HATES eve. She never could understand why i "needed" to stay in that night we planned to go out (POS was under attack), or that time i "needed" to stay up till stupid-o'clock in the morning (omg, killing custom offices take forever!). etc, etc, etc!

I guess it depends what kind of player you are, and what responsibilities you choose to take on. Eve can be something fun to play every now and again, or something that you "need" to check. Personally, as a CEO, i can't just go afk for a week. Even the idea frightens me!

I remember my friend when i started playing saying "Gee, if only we were this dedicated in the real world, we might be rich and successful or something!". I definately agree! Big smile

Spider sense says when to talk about Eve, or not, mostly not. Not an addict (I can quit anytime I want) thread has some deep replies. Back in the 90's+ I'm playing standalone games like SimCity, Cossacks, Tropico and getting **** for it, now those same ppl play Farmville. But they just can't make the leap. The EvE leap. Packaging? Like how Elves and stuff will never rope me in. Can't go there. But what's funny about EvE, to me is, no matter how good your judgement, your first reaction is (always) wrong. Just canny and it goes to the balance of this game is, while always in flux, on the whole incredible.

AND to the EggHeads who can't see game addiction have they never seen a 5 year old with a DS? Really, how do ppl live such sheltered lives?

I talk about with people that are interested in Eve. I just don't know any of them out in the bright shiny scary world. Most of my gaming friends have been going the way of consoles lately. Maybe when Dust comes out we'll have a game in common again.

Not at all, you might be able to manipulate the situation but ultimately you have no control about the final verdict that people have of you or of situations. To think you do - is a logical misstep.

I don't hid my addiction at all. Heck my desk at work screams "I PLAY EVE!". I would take a picture but...that would get me fired. Lets just say that when someone gets curious about EvE at my work (happens more than one would think) they come and ask me about it.

Nah I don't hide my EvE career, and I wouldn't call myself a nerd or even a geek for that matter. I just like how in EvE you can make people cry and get rewarded for it. Oh yeah and cruising around in a rifter with The Cramps blaring has kinda become my new prozac of choice.

I don't hide it at all, from whatever game I play, I'll tell those bastards on vent I have to change my training queue rq and they can wait 20minutes while I change queue then bullshit with some odd corp mate for the rest of the duration. But then the people on vent get mad and tell me to hurry up and I'm sure you know how it is from there.

I hide it. I wish I knew fellow EVE players in my area. Would be nice to have people to talk to the game about. People you tell you play this game, and they learn for how long, look at you differently afterwards. I would love to meet another EVE player from my town.
