Although this started out with some ranting on your idea I'm glad we did convince you to give EVE Online a try.

I really hope you will like EVE and stick around to play it for a long time. Just have fun while playing and progress one step at the time and you will eventually find something you like, it may or may not be the thing you originally thought you liked but you will find that out in time.

And if you ever have any questions or if your stuck and need advice, don't be afraid to ask. There is only 1 stupid question, that is a question you didn't ask. Most questions although you might think others find it stupid are likely to be asked before by multiple people before you. If you want you can even shoot me an EVEmail or open a conversation when I'm online.

Well a nice example of "doing stuff for SP" is/was Ultima online. For those who don't know it, UO is one of the first MMOs and also on of the first sandbox games. It used a do stuff to get SP which lead to ppl griding enough money to buy a house then lock themself inthere macroing days and days till they had the skills they wanted.
Not really fun tbh, otherwise quite good game if you are into mediaval/magic theme and you don't care about the looks (isometric 3D 4tw :) )

For example, let's say that a skill takes you about a month to learn with the current system. Why not give us the option to learn it in a week or two by logging in every day for two hours or so.

Have a guess what was suggested a million times already? On top of that such a feature was in beta. What may work in a single player game will only force you to bot in a MMO (at least if you want to be competitive).

It would be much more immersive to learn by doing, as opposed to your character growing as you watch Netflix or play another video game. Right now, I could just pay for six months of EVE, quickly make enough cash for months worth of ability training (not hard to do at all) and then do nothing but log on every day or two and queue up abilities for those six months.

There is plenty of stuff to do in EVE. Most of it wont happen in highsec tho.

And I would have to define the top as having the skills required to fly effectively (or competitively) the type of tech II+ ship you'd like to be piloting.

That's not the top by any means. You make it to the top by using the SP you got to win against an enemy that is playing the game for more then 6 years. Having lots of SP is not a goal nor is having ship X with officer mods Y. It's all just numbers in a database and a sign that you played the game for n month and grinded m ISK.

Quite in contrast to any other MMO you can leave a mark in EVE. Go to Jita 4-4, there is a statue dedicated to some Burn Eden folk who won a riddle. They have their names at the most prominent place in EVE. No skill points involved.

Zombie made themselves immortal with the Yulai attack. They understood the game mechanics well and turned that to their advantage. Some prick called the GHSC "insignificant". Only 4 month later they got destroyed by a team of 3 players. Molly is know as the man with the biggest balls, Digital Communist as the most cunning covert ops pilot. Tyrrax Thorrk, Entity and many many more are remembered (mostly for not being dear to us :).

But you can't know that because you never played the game that is EVE. And a trial wont get you there.
