How bombs work?

Hello - anyone have good guide or advice how about how the bombs work?

I understand the basics. In particular, does an object in space set off the bomb if it's in the bomb's flight path? I ask bc I bombed at group of ships at station - within 30 km, all inside the "bubble" shown on the tactical overlay etc - but only the station showed any damage.

Same question bombing gangs at gates - does the bomb need a clear path to the ships? Can the gate set off the bomb early? Etc.

Any general comments about using bomb effectively is welcome, thanks in advance!

Honestly if you are serious about using a bomb you should experiment with them on SiS. The situation you are describing sounds odd, but the ship could have been in a force field (POS) or docking/undocking on an NPC station. Ten ton hammer has a good guide for this.

AFAIK, bombs don't have any collision. However, they are screwy around large objects (like gates and stations) at times because of how those things interact with damage.

I believe bombs work like smartbombs on stations: if it would hit the station it doesn't work.

Thanks for the answers so far.

The "impact bubble" that appears when you have tac overlay on and mouse-over the bomb launcher (just like you get a range bubble for turrets) is really useful. I did better by making sure my targets were within the bubble before I fired, and hit several. Its an added thing to pay attention to tho, making the bomb run that much trickier.

Any other guidance? Thanks again!

Join the chat channel "Bombers Bar" we run SB ops pretty consistantly, and there are always people in that channel willing to help/form a fleet up of bombers.

bombs fire 30 km directly out of the front of your ship. with your tactical display open, you can see exactly the blast radius that your bomb will hit if fired now.
i've never seen a bomb deflect off of anything. there doesn't seem to be any 'cover' aspect to objects within the EVE

Bombs fly out of your launcher along a vector directly in front of your ship, unless you are motionless, in which case it just sits there and explodes, likely killing you instead. So always make sure you are actually moving forward before firing your bomb launcher. They have a range of 30km until they detonate.

Bombs have an explosion area of effect of 15km and do 6400 damage of one type determined by the type of bomb. Bombs are highly resistant to their own type of damage, but have no resists to other types of damage. Thus several bombs can be fired from bombers simultaneously and explode with range of each other without destroying each other so long as they are of the same type.

bombs have an explosion radius of 400m (missile damage formula applies). Thus any ship with a signature radius of less than 400m will take reduced damage. Velocity of the target is irrelevant because bombs have no explosion velocity. All damage is applied instantaneously within the AoE.

Besides damage bombs, there are also Void bombs, which drain 1800GJ of cap, and lockbreaker bombs, which break locks. Lockbreaker bombs have a jam strength of only 12.5. So BC and above have a reasonable chance to hold locks. Both of these types have an increased velocity and reduced flight time. But the maximum range is still 30km.

I wasn't aware that the tactical overlay now showed the AoE of bombs. Neat.

Soldarius also worth noting that Void and Lockbreaker Bombs travel faster then any of the damage bombs, and can be launched just a second before say Shrapnel bombs without exploding before impact.
