Hello space friends.

Please, won't you join me by the fire? Treat yourself to a cup of tea. I enjoy earl grey with a wedge of lemon, but I'm not the snooty type to make judgments about people. I've never really enjoyed the taste of coffee: it leaves a chalky after-taste in the roof of my mouth which I find unpleasant, even when diluted with chocolate and confections at the Caribou, Starbucks or Tim Horton's. So there's my first point of divergence, perhaps, from many of you: tea, not coffee. I do enjoy the smell of hot coffee, though; so, perhaps we can salvage our friendship? I certainly hope so.

On to more about me, then.

My name is James Conley. I am a 25-year old veteran of the United States Navy, having served honourably in my country's armed forces immediately after completing my public education. I am a native of the Great State of Texas, where it is legal to drown your children if God told you to do it and where shooting door-to-door salesmen is not only legal but encouraged. During my service in the Navy, I have lived in Chicago, Illinois; Norfolk, Virginia; and San Diego, California; additionally, I had opportunity to visit Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and a small island which I am told is somehow part of France. Following my service in the Navy, I have lived in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and presently reside in North Dakota.

I am a student of the humanities and social sciences. I am presently pursuing a double-major in Political Science and Sociology at my local State University, with minors in History and Philosophy. My career goal is to become a tenured professor of Sociology at Colombia or Berkeley. To say that I am well-read would be accurate, though I do not presume to think myself some prestigious scholar. The CSM interests me in much the way that student government and model UN organisations interest me: they present an insight into the conduct and operation of a political campaign, and of a political body. That the CSM is allegedly inept or overpowered, to me, is irrelevant: the curious thing, for me, is satisfied by its existence and the body of communication, beliefs and arguments that arise in its proximity.

I like to think that I am a good person, but who doesn't? Moving on.

I picked up EVE Online in 2008, after deciding that I wanted to try a new game. From then to now, Lyris Nairn has been my primary character and has engaged in many different styles of play. I began my EVE career in EVE University, back when Kelduum Revaan was just another guy, Dee Carson was Director of Operations, and everyone was still talking about Curzon Dax's song "Sabre A". While in EVE University, I trained into a Retriever and gave mining a shot; then, after leaving, I trained up Drone skills for a Vexor cruiser, and gave pirating a shot. While in a pirate corp, we entered Faction Warfare and there I was able to enjoy ECM with a Blackbird. From large-scale "newb fleets" in EVE University to small gang warfare in FW, and Low Sec in general, I got to see a lot of things in my first few months. Then I tried out missions. I ended up training into a Dominix with Tech2 railguns, and if you check my standings you'll find me at perfect 10.0 with the Theology Council, having run missions in Sasoutikh for nearly a year. During this time, I founded my own corporation and engaged in role playing. Hashimoto Corporation was the name of my corp, and it still exists with a distinctive "big blue H" decal made from overlapping certain logo patterns. Our corporation did a lot of organized mission running, and consolidated trading: specifically, we put buy orders up for every damned thing at very low prices for the purposes of acquiring cheap minerals. For quite some time, I was bouncing in and out of Hashimoto Corporation as I explored different areas of the game. Wormholes and T3 ship production were brand new, and I got a small taste of each. One of the corps I joined was the IEEE, the Standards and Practices corporation run by C&P superstar Zedrik Cayne. I took part in the Joe Phoenix fiasco, if any of you remember that. In around the same period of time, I also showed up in a POSprey to defend and repair Chribba's high-sec research towers.

In 2010, I joined Goonswarm. I have received a very bipolar reaction since my arrival; some people love my gimmicks, and some people hate them; some people really care a lot that I played EVE for a couple of years before joining Goonswarm, and some people don't care at all. Ultimately, I stay in Goonswarm because it has a wonderful infrastructure for the casual player or the new player. Sure, if you want to, you can become part of the ~sov war~ machine and shoot at structures all day; but, if that just isn't your thing, you can log in to chat with people, build and hand out rifters to newbies, and then go flit around in one yourself when you feel like it. That is pretty much what I do right now.

In closing, let me say that this campaign is very enjoyable to me and that I sincerely harbour no malice whatever to any of the other candidates in this race. I like you all, pretty much. I especially have respect for both Kelduum Revaan and The Mittani, because they both represent a large group of mostly newbies. I hope everyone else enjoys this race as much as I do, and I am looking forward to learning more about the other candidates and eventually working with some of them in Iceland as a part of the seventh Council of Stellar Management.

I can get behind this. Kelduum was always somewhat strange.

The sheer ease with which you forced yourself into the EVE=-O forums' collective consciousness bodes well for your ability to make CCP listen to you.

Good luck!

Hi, Lyris,

You might remember me as a fellow member of Goonfleet dot com, a fellow squad member, and from my many appearances in your little-flag thingie at the top of the screen where it shows you who gave you space-likes. I just came here to say that I approve of your efforts as the One, True Pubbie Whisperer and I hope that your campaign to teach pubbies what it means to breath through their noses works out.

Also, I have a serious business question for you that I'd like to see answered during this fire-side chat abomination:

Are you 'burgin?

That is all.

I was burgin' 'til about an hour ago, but then my ~kickboxing girlfriend~ went to Wendy's and brought me some burgers. ♥
