My video card is dying, what should I get until the new nvidia cards hit the market in 1-12 months?

currently have a 295gtx. long story short i'm pretty sure swtor cooked her and in the process has nearly taken my OS raid stripe with it... or i have two completely separate problems, or maybe i have 3 problems... i'm rambling. sorry, that was supposed to be a short story.

LETS TRY AGAIN

i currently have a 295gtx with terminal cancer.
its only a matter of time, doctors say it could be days, or it could be months.

what card would you recommend to replace her?

-short term solution. this card will likely go back in a box or in some ancillary pc in a few months
-I dont want to go all out on a $500 card because i'm trying to hold out for nvidia's next line (honestly this whole fermi line doesn't overly impress me so, not going 580)
-probably want to stick with nvidia, i could be convinced to leave my comfort zone however
-currently thinking like a 560ti, but if i could go cheaper and still maintain acceptable performance i'm open

please help me oop. i've been so wanderlust with other games of late, but as usual i come crawling back to the eve forums, hat in hand, looking for assistance.

thanks in advance!

Quick reply, little time available.

You could try this:

Around 140$ for a 1GB GTX 460 v2 with a slight factory overclock (788 vs 778 stock core frequency) which should be only a bit slower than a stock 560ti for which you'd pay at least 210$.
I have a very similar (but slower) model in my machine (from the GTX 460 v1 generation, with a 715 factory overclocked core from the 675 stock frequency) and it's been more than adequate so far.

If you are willing to "go out of the comfort zone" and go ATI//AMD, you could try this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908
135$ for a Radeon HD 6850 1GB.

Speaking EVE FullHD max detail but no AA, your currently frying video card could probably push 310-320 FPS station-spinning, the 560ti and the 6850 would probably get around 280-290 and the 460v2 will likely make it to 260-270.
VERY rough ballpark figures, anyway.
Oh, and they only eat up under 165W for the 460 and under 135W for the 6850, compared to your current card which gobbles up roughly 300W.

nice. here was what i was going to buy:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130604

looks like the one i picked is about 80% more cost for roughly 10-15% increase in performance with no significant features or abilities separating them. (edit: unless you think i'm losing a lot going to the 192bit vs the 256)

i'm going to buy some expensive beer with the money i just saved Big smile
all hail the guru, thanks for the help

depends on what you play.... for eve you could easily get away with a AMD 6770. which is like $100 same with swtor and many other games.
if you need skyrim or BF3 though get the 560ti. or an amd 6850.

Go for Nvidia, seriously, don't bother with AMD stuff and what not for at least the next few years that is if they have become better. In my experience games always had better support and quicker fixes for gaming using nvidia cards than the competition in the last 10 years. I recommend getting 560 or 580 with 3gb rather than sli. Good luck and enjoy the smell of a new card, it is the best Big smile

You picked a rather expensive one (235$ after rebate, 250$ otherwise) with only a modest factory overclock.
You can do better price or performance-wise with a different 560ti model.

Down to 180$ if you're willing to jump through the rebate hoops (205$ otherwise), same factory frequency overclock as the one you picked, to 850 core.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125363
210$ after rebate (225$ otherwise) with a much stronger core overclock to 900 from the reference 822.

Personally, I'm rather partial to the Gigabyte ones, I like the dual-fan, heavy-duty heatsink cooling system better, especially if you have some inside-the-case airflow going using case fans like I do (some air will be recirculated inside the case, cools the card better but heats up the rest of the stuff if you don't have the proper interior airflow).
