Travelling safely (or as safely as possible) in Lowsec?

I'm great at dying at this game, but always looking for ways to improve those odds. To this end, I'm asking this forums about what skills and techniques I and others should consider when traveling.

While general information won't be turned away (better redundancy than nothing, really) I'm looking for information on the following situation:

You're travelling in a ship that, for the sake of this exercise, can be whatever you want but we'll assume it doesn't have much firepower. A cheap courier ship, perhaps, or a PVE frigate. You come out of a gate, you line up for the next gate... and are locked on. Surprise! You've got a red friend who wants to say hello, and he's doing so.

You franticly hit warp. Oh god Warp, get me out of this. Get me out of- well, not today. Your friend brought a date along, and she's just scrambled your warp drive.

Maybe you can make it out of this.

But in this case, you won't, because you're like me, and you're so deer-in-the-headlights that by the time you shake that fact that you've been targetted, you're dead.

Good thing you had a good clone, and weren't carrying anything you couldn't replace! This time, at least.

I know I'm not the only one who has ever been in this situation. Any pointers?

mwd cloak trick on BC ..... >>> get caught once in 5 months because i was too close to concord billboard. Not perfect for pvp ships (as ur scan res sucks), but can be good for setting traps ;)

Well Snake, I'm sure you know just how badly I want to flame you for this comment

Sadly, I have to say, that Snake has flewn stay thru camps I'm in using this "tactic"

It is currently a working and sound way of doing things and it's not an exploit

Shortly, what to do if you don't have a cloak+MWD. You should have them, train for them and train the trick, like mentioned earlier it's better than what follows!

1) after jump, don't do anything. "Hold cloak" means you don't align, don't doubclick anywhere, stay still. They don't see you, they can't hurt you yet, for full 60 seconds. They only saw the gate flash and you appearing in local, they don't even know what you are flying unless they had a scout on the other side. It's even possible that the ship was just travelling in the opposite direction, or on his way to warp. If they missed the gate flash, they might just go away. If you break cloak too soon they react to seeing you on grid, cancel warp and eat you.

2) after the grid is fully loaded, assess the situation. Local count, how many on grid, what ships, how far and where. Dscan.

3) think (you still got about 45 seconds of perfect invulnerability left, stay calm :) ) Wait at least 15 seconds (session change timer, during which you couldn't jump back via the gate even if you made it to the gate alive)

4) think some more

5) when the 60 second timer is nearing it's end, it's time to act.* You got two choices:

A) if there are no fast-locking ships (tacklers) inside overheated warp disruptor range, and you are in a fast-aligning ship, try warping to your out gate

B) if you are in a slow aligning ship and you think they can tackle you before you get to warp, you have to try and burn back to the gate you just came from. Approach the gate, engage propulsion and all tank mods and hope for the best!

Do not shoot back unless you know you can take them! If you aggress them back, you can't jump through the gate.

Also hope there is hisec on the other side :D

* clever pies can also count and are well aware of the timers and your options, so you can break cloak earlier in the hope of catching them just a bit off guard

1. Avoid taking slow ships anywhere dangerous by yourself. Bigger is not better, you just live a little longer and leave better salvage.

2. The in game maps gives you statistical break downs of systems that are "dangerous". Ships and pods killed is a great place to start.

3. Team work. While you can play this game by yourself, you can only unlock its potential by creating relationships with your fellow pod pilots. Having a fast, or even cloakable, ship jump headfirst into danger is better than jumping your slow failmobile.

4. Come to Amamake. We sell bikes to those in need of excellent transportation devices.

Nano Cynabal, you wont even need a cloak. If you get caught in that just burn burn burn, any frig chasing you will be volleyed trying to keep up.

Edit, also Pirates don't use frigs cause of this gate gun dealies, so as long as there's no remote sebo'ed T3 you should be fine.

Don't ask about Italics, just tilt your head.

1. Alt scout
2. Intel channels (get some friends)
3. PvP: Fly stuff that is tanked enough to get back to gate, or quick enough to warp off.
4. PvE: MWD-cloak trick
5. warp out technique for your pod when all else fails.

and/or....fit warp stabs - saved my alt a few times when collecting stuff in low - yeah gimps your cargo in a hauler but gets you out if only 1 or 2 people with points.....in range that is.

But....mwd/cloak much more reliable imho

edit - -bad spelling!!

Your single biggest problem, one that Roime has already pointed out, is that before moving you need to assess who is in local, who is near the gate, and who is on d-scan. You should never, EVER be aligning to the next gate without noticing people there - and EVERYONE you do not know is a hostile. You can't wander around low and null without paying attention.

You have the choice of warping somewhere or going back and jumping back through the same gate.....

If you warp somewhere else and there are people in local, you run the risk of warping into them at the other gate - possibly into a smartbomb camp. Watch for ships destroyed in the last hour on the map, and if you see some check for pods destroyed. Ships and pods destroyed often means smartbombs. If it looks lousy on the map, find another way or go later. If you find a bunch of people in local but not on the gate, try warping to something else before the next gate to come at it from another direction.

In short you have three possibilities:
a) The easy one: Nano your ship so that you warp out within less than 3 secs or so. Works nicely on Frigates as well as most Shield Tanked Faction Cruisers. If you have proper skill and align fast enough even fast point frigs won't catch you.

b) Get a cloak: Every ship which can warp clocked is 99% safe since there a no bubbles. The remaining 1% is bad luck if you can't clock because of an item next to you or lag of your computer.

c) The tough one: Get cloak and MWD and do the MWD + Warp trick on jump. Works on most ships but you should partice it alot. Lag or stuff around you can ruin your day.

Great ship for general autopiloting in hi sec and camp running in low sec. Seems to insta-warp. Can travel at 698 m/s on normal sub-warp, 175 m/s while cloaked, 4700+ with MWD on, and goes from gate to gate at 8.6 AU/sec.

You should also know that you can cloak and THEN hit MWD for about a second after that, giving you a cloaked velocity of 1,200 m/s or so for about 10 seconds - usually enough to get you back to the gate if you really want to. This ship was never caught in a gate camp, but did get popped once ninja salvaging a gate camp :). Nowadays. you would use T2 salvagers, I suppose.

A Cov Ops has huge advantages, though, over a t1 frig.

If you're going to go through dangerous space, make sure you have the right ships. anything that uses a covert ops cloak, such as cov ops frigates or cruisers, and T2 industrial ships are your best bets. Things like a Viator, a Crane, or a Prowler will get you through low-sec with 99% safety, just so long as you remember to activate cloak the moment you start moving. I can say from experience, that those things are a ***** and a half to actually catch.

Other than those ships, either fly with an escort or risk flying with as many warp core stabs as you can fit in the low-slots.

I have schemed too long to be supplanted by dead gods. If I cannot have this world, no one can.

Get yourself a Viator.....it warps cloaked :) and can stay cloaked like forever........

I use it for the occasional courier run or romp into lo-sec, and so far have survived. As always keep you eyes open and dont hang around anywhere for long. :)

Hilariously, I have one, but hadn't been flying it for fear of losing it. When I wrote this post, I had just lost an Exequror. However, a lot of the advice I see here makes me feel more confident about flying, well, anything.

Lazy as I am I just copied a text I wrote some time ago, works in low and under wardecs, any mistakes are my own and I am still learning the mechanics in EVE

Hi fellow spacers,

I assume most of you know the tricks how to survive camps, but nevertheless I want to highlight some methods which worked very well for me.

MWD + CLOAK

How it works?

1. align to an celestial object (or station/gate)
2. imideatly activate MWD then cloak (use shortcuts) - if you are used to it you can cloak first then MWD (but the time window is really short).
3. pulse your MWD (shut it of before the cyle ends)
4. just before the MWD cyle ends...decloak and jam the warp button....due to the MWD you should be fast enough to instawarp.

PROs: hard to tackle also for specialized tacklers

CONTRA: some campers are used to this, and they uses droneballs (drones assisting fast ships...forming a larger ball) trying to decloak you earlier...so do not align to something obvious

BE FAST AND AGILE

if you just have to travel without cargo three words: SHUTTLE OR POD
but preferably shuttle because you have better chance to avoid a podkill....align and permajam the warp button

IF YOU ARE SLOW

always have an alt with no implants and a cheap ship to scout, I can't count how often that saved my ass

WARPSTABS

here I have to admit a lack of knowledge as I don't use them

BURN BACK TO GATE

says it all in the name but only efficient if you have some tank an AB or MWD

STATION GAMES

If you are tackled in front of a station, stop shooting, stop remote repping, stop energy transfer, stop neuting, RECALL YOUR DRONES and pray you survive until the timer runs out and you can dock.....AND don't forget to overheat your mods, seconds can be essential.

Seriously, don't take me serious, I MEAN IT...seriously
