maybe the cost of the paint job could be something like free for frigates then increasing in price for both size and tech type of the ship,
for example t1 cruiser costs 5% of its hull for a new paint job but a T2 costs 7-10% and faction 7-15%? this way it still keeps it cheap and doable but still makes faction/t2 ships still feel special.
and it would be nice if you didn't want a new paint job and your personal/corp/alliance or a mixer of all 3 on the base paint job?

That way you can your personal picture/emblem on your fancy faction pimped up ships and your corp/alliance logo on generic hulls

Some of those ships look awesome.

I would love to customize my own ship but maybe it would be better for the game if you had to learn new skills and use a new station/POS service to do it....

To be honest, I don't really see why people are so against something like ship customization going into the microtransaction system. This is the kind of thing that system was designed to deal with and to be honest, spending a dollar or so on a superWTF awesome ship color scheme only benefits CCP if it is done through the aurum system. And if you are one of the many thousands who buy plex with ISK then this system is no different than ISK for ship designs. Personally, let CCP use their micro transaction system for something that is as innocent as ship customization.

EDIT- In the realm of corp/alliance/coalition logos, those should be done through isk, simply because they affect large numbers of people.

i would really like ship customization. i believe it would need the option to turn it off and return ships to their normal colors (for fleet fights) but when im roaming around it would be a fun feature.

i am curious how much strain that would put on the server though, loading each custom paint job :P

thumbs up for ship customization!

I think this would be a great idea, and I personally like the interface shown in the OP's post.

Because I too would like to fly a Hello Kitty Scorpion.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

Great idea thats been around forever, but can't see how it can be done without increasing server load. Sad

Though i hope im wrong! Lol

Post with your main, like a BOSS!

And no, i don't live in highsec.  As if that would make your opinion any less wrong.

Will get back to you on that, I'm still in discussions with 3d programmers on a solution, but most of the load will be client side and someone just offered up a better solution than I was originally thinking

In my Opinion this should be Aurum based....

ok lynch be but let me tell you why its good to make it Aurum based..

First it should be keep as special thing not everyone should have it on his noob frig...

2nd CCP should have something from it and have a nice plex sink is good for the company = more money for cpp = faster and better updates due to more ppl work for ccp ( also dont even try to complain with " they will use it for WoD or Dust herpderp" because also eve will benefit from it. )

3rd: it should be 1000Aurum per "skin" and it should be destroyed when the ship gets destroyed.... that´s the spirit of eve u can lose anything exept the shirt u wear :).
Also 1000 Aurum is not so much ccp gift much aurum and one plex = 3,5k aurum = 3 skins and really how many ships do you want to paint every little ship u have....NO

Also this Option to pay makes it really tasty for CCP to implement it, you dont need to have a "skin" it doesn´t give you super powers or anything just cool looks so it´s totaly optional!

Sure there will be many ppl who say now QQ I NEVER will buy anything for aurum or pay euros for it.........
So also many ppl in League of Legends say QQ i dont pay for skins ... sooo ? there are many ppl who still do, but most of them dont spam forums about they buy skins .....

Plex dont cost to much ~500mio isk is totaly ok .... remember it should keep special so it cool to have it and then u kill them u can havest much more tears :D

thanks for reading

sorry for bad english

Still figuring out the details of server cost, but its roughly around 32bits extra data per unique ship for the server to send to each client in the ballpark during preload - with high levels of customisation. This estimation has been formulated with the help of an ex ccp employer who suggested an alternative coding method to translate the customisation data.

The majority of the load has been confirmed as being client based but his method would require new shaders and code to handle his suggestion. Shaders do not use much of your computer's or video card's memory but loading and rendering each unique ship would, which is where options to turn the feature (or parts of this feature) off would help.
The server would however still need to send your client the details of each unique ship so it wouldn't negate the extra server load.

If our estimation is correct, 32bits would be pretty small.. even with 1000 pilots in a system with 500 unique ships there would not be much extra load on the server. Saying that this example could still cause problems with your pc especially with an old card installed - Unless you're playing brackets online and are zoomed out completely.

Once I've talked to someone who works with graphics engines and shaders we may be able to estimate potential load on your client. While I do not know or have contact with anyone at CCP in the relevant department the lead 3d engineer from Ubisoft Massive in Sweden is willing to talk me through it which may be helpful.

would it be possible to have an auto shutoff feature? you select a number of ships beforehand and if there are that many on field it will turn the paintjobs off automatically so that you dont have to fiddle with it when the poo starts flying.

As long as there is an option to completely disable customized paintjobs (for client performance reasons).

But as long as that disable option is provided, i'm all for custom paint and would spend a filthy amount of isk doing it.

I agree with that, I think for people as well who hate the idea of pink hello kitty logos ( seriously who could hate that? ) you should also have an option to just leave the standard paint jobs on.
