I can think of an easy reason it shouldn't happen. History has shown time and again that when you open things up to players, they abuse/misuse the feature. You'll find ships with images of breasts on them, or genitalia, or neo-**** symbols. The degenerates would love this.

The real question is, can it be bedazzled?

Life-time subscription if so.

I like the ship colors the way they are (except the old black Crane was better than the new gray Crane). In addition to breaking immersion, custom paint jobs would just stay docked like all the Guardian-Vexors and other expensive limited edition ships.

I'd rather see CCP connect Aurum to the RL EVE store so I can order ship models for my office at work with PLEX.

What is immersion breaking about having custom coloured ships? With the technology available in Eve's Universe it should be not only possible but relatively easy. Its more likely that ships would look different than all exactly the same.

Even pink ships, I'm pretty sure there will be pink ships in the future. :P
We already have them in RL now :)

You know, after seeing these mock-ups... I really don't think I could keep playing if these aren't implemented.

T'amber, you've either made EVE perfect or ruined it for me completely. Ugh

I have to agree. In fact, in the pre-Incursion days, when you were essentially your ship, I remember being disappointed when I learned you couldn't have a custom paint job on your ship. I think this is that special connection that the CCP devs were talking about when they wanted to increase the immersion of the player into the game world.

In almost any game where the essential representation of the player is a vehicle, the game lets you customize the vehicle to mark it as you (even if it's selecting from among a number of presets). Mechs with custom war paint, cars with custom paint jobs and trim (Midnight Club III: Dub Edition comes to mind), and my all-black Fokker Dr. VII in Red Baron are just a few examples.

In a universe of capsuleers, how much of a kick would it be to recognize another player's ship. "Look! You can tell that's Chribba's ship because it's gold with a giant silver 'V' on the side." Better, though perhaps more difficult, how cool would it be to see those custom paint jobs on the kill screen in Eve-kill or Battleclinic. "Yeah that's Punkturis' polkadot pattern alright, unmistakable."

What privateer worth their salt doesn't name their ship, and maybe the ship's name should show up on the hull too.

YES, PLEASE.

I just realized how much having text on the hull of a ship actually adds to the immersion factor. Also, stickers. Again, pre-made stickers (that maybe you could change the color of) would be just fine - for example, things like animal heads, kill tallies, numbers (can be meaningless or can be tied to, say, how many of that particular hull you've bought, or what number that particular ship came off of the production line at, or any number of things), skull and crossbones for the enterprising pirates, faction symbols (for example, whatever the equivalent of the American bald eagle is for each faction - they all have some particular symbol they aspire to, right?), flags, all that stuff that adorns real-world ships and aircraft that is conspicuously missing from our EVE ships.

The symbols would be pre-built, and you would be able to put them on pre-determined locations, giving you options but not giving you so many options that you immediately run into penises everywhere (or, for that matter, run into ships that are horrifically busy-looking and visually incomprehensible). I doubt we'll see this happen anytime soon, since we don't even have colors yet, but it's something I'd love to see in the future (along with better ship deaths, visible ship damage with crew members spilling out into space, random hit locations and... okay, I'll stop there...).

Import image files to make logos.

Watch_ Fred Fred Frederation_ and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it!

Maybe have faction full body war paints in the faction LP stores. Like blood raiders blood dripping paint for your ship and then about everything else mentioned in this thread.

I support this thread. And there should be standard faction logos you can choose from and use. Like brutor tribe and such, if you don't want to use a custom logo.

Something clever

I'm not really into the idea of custom paintjobs.

Eve has a very distinct look within the MMO platform and by handing out crayons this is likely to go up in smoke. Before anything else, Eve is a beautiful game, so I see no need to pollute this with pink paintjobs and comedy cocks emblazoned upon every spare patch of a ships hull. I'm sure many players will find this sort of thing hilarious but then not everyone finds the American Pie franchise life affirming. Add into the mix the opportunity for people to scrawl any sort of bigoted, sexist junk across their space camouflage and you have a recipe for disaster. This may be the worst case scenario but if you give players even basic versions of these tools they will figure it out.

So, T'amber...

I think CCP needs to meet the playerbase half way. Here's my suggestion:

Allow ships to be re-skinned using pre-made paintjobs that are linked to that ships relevant faction.

We saw the potential of this with the Scorpion hull when it was re-designed with the various house colours. Allow CCP to have some fun creating colour schemes for Sarum Family, Federation Navy, Thukker Mix etc. Use Serpentis and the other pirate factions to push things a little further; Jackson Pollock meets Sansha; really make them unique and wild compared to their law abiding foes. This way you get a whole host of variety and new content whilst reinforcing the ethos and composition of New Eden, and avoid tarnishing a beautiful picture almost a decade in the making.

Would be absolutely great, but I do hope all these customizable features will be VERY expansive, like 50Mil ISK per logo you upload and so forth.

So the paint on a Hurricane is supposed to cost more than the actual ship? Derp derp. No.

Keep it cheap and fun. Let people have a feature they can enjoy without worrying about getting isk-raped.

This would be nice.

I'm very sure whenever you start hearing the *BZZzzzzzzZZZZzzzz* proper to goons fleets you can expect to see hundreds of pink Drakes and Canes, it's ok, they'll be easier to target Lol

Sure will, we're still short by about 1100 participants however and I'm hoping to fix that next week - however I'll post the current results for you later today.
