No, he was actually correct, that reason, combined with the issue of increased server strain pretty much means that any custom ship skins will be limited to pre made faction skins, and possibly alliance skins (with a submission process like alliance logos). The very best people can reasonably expect will be some system akin to the character creation tool, ie, a limited amount of designs that can be made from a limited amount of effects (stripes, gradients etc)

The image on the front page is just a tool to help with your imagination and is not meant as a troll, I'll put up a non-pink ship when I get home tonight as its obviously not going to help with selling the idea :)

I would be happy with just custom corp. logo, a choice of stripes and some misc. shapes and a few paint jobs!

My guess, in a marketing/management perspective :

It's something they keep an eye on and they will do whatever it takes to get it done somehow if possible. That or... O M G... they-need-to-go-back-to-management-school-eek!!

I added a couple more questions from suggestions made by people in this thread but the idea was to keep it as simple as possible because theres just so many ways that this could be done. What in particular is missing that you wanted to see?

I really like the idea of customizable ship appearances, but getting it implemented is going to be a headache for most parties involved. For starters, there will be the same forum wars over ship customization that we've seen over NEX items. Specifically whether or not said items should be permanently destroyed, or if they are similar to your overall appearance, and should they show up on killmails, etc.

No matter how it is implemented, there will be a group who bitches about it being an aweful thing, followed by another group telling the first group to HTFU, while a third group tells the second group to go play WoW, a fourth group who gushes with enthusiasm over it, and a fifth group that just trolls the threads to death regardless of content.

Actually dazzle camo as an option would get a MAJOR thumbs up from me, i think that looks very cool (way bette rthan digial or smooth)

As a side note, although many will probably disagree, I don't think that engine trail color should be customizable.

It messes with my admittedly rudimentary sense of immersion. Smile

Actually it would be nice, if your propulsion mod meta level affected the color and/or shape of the engine trail. You wouldn't need to have a unique color or shape for every module, but it would allow changing the color without messing up the immersion factor.
