Eve *does* need something to draw battles off the jumpgates and stations and into areas where aggression mechanics aren't as likely to become a significant factor in the fight. That said, I can't imagine what that would be.

Get rid of the gates, change the directional scanner to allow for a warpable result that becomes more accurate the closer one is to the target and the more narrow the focus of the scan. Have it such that players need to jump from any planet or moon to get to the next map adjacent system, then have them land some where randomly near the star.

A drawn up version of this idea is here, http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/AdunhSlavy/RSIV611.htm.

Fights around objectives such as POSes, Sov structures and Stations will often remain as the large set piece battles, the Big Blobs CCP seems so overly and myopically focused upon for their marketing. The in between should be a wide open wild ride full of hunting, chasing and evasion, feints and charges. Defenses in depth, real scouting, true need for pickets, wings and squads.

Eve combat is lame because frankly, Eve space mechanics suck.
