Pedant- in-Chief here, but can we please spell the word properly?

Its 'reivers', not reavers...the latter is the name from the Firelfy series I grant you, but the original is the proper name for the border bandits of 14th-15th century England/Scotland including one area called 'the debatable land'.

As my mother is from that area and has one of the bandit surnames (Forster), its an area of interest to me Oops

Aren't they just different forms of the same verb? Reave vs. reive? I would think the border bandits got their name from the verb. Or did the verb derive from the bandits' activities? Which came first?

Has it ever been stated that the Reavers are based on the Reivers? If not, then isn't it rather presumptuous of you to correct anyone's spelling? They could just as easily arrived at the name without the historical context, making your correction...incorrect.

+1 for corpses on ships

Bloodraiders aren't cannibals like the reavers are supposed to be are they? Draining blood is one thing, eating the flesh is another. I'd rather deal with them instead of the Sansha.

They drain you and use your blood to do lots of stuff, from infusions to painting there ships

Reavers aren't just cannibles ether, eating your flesh is just one of the meany exciting things reavers do one they catch you.

And they both use blood painted ships, webs/mag graplers, and close range debilitating tactics so they can board you.

I wanted to paint my space ship red, but I couldn't find enough goats.

I'd second the Probe as a stand in for Serenity. Down to the two drones (shuttles?) and large cargo bay. While Serenity is a purely transport ship, it's too small to fit with any of the Eve industrials.

Eve's security levels fit pretty well with the Firefly world as already mentioned. Except that while Reaver (or however you spell it) space is essentially one or two planets no one goes to, null sec in Eve is huge and widely populated.

Sancha as Reavers? Weird f**kers from outside even the 'wild west' of low/null sec that raid into empire space? I'm unaware of any Eve canon that really approximates cannibals and such.

Firefly was a good series that just didn't last long.

Very interesting little fact, though. I consider my RPG lore just a little more complete now, so thank you.

I'd like to use the Firefly word, however, as it conveys, for me, the dread and loathing of seeing a trio of -5700 security status folks show up in the local of a 0.1 that I was messing around with. Cry

I hate to go all Etymology Man on this, but just thought I'd mention that reaver is derived from the Old English reafere (agent noun of the OE verb reafian, meaning to rob something from someone, plunder, pillage). So, if we're going to really be pedantic I insist we spell it thusly.

I'd rather just spell it "reaver", though. Words and spelling change over time, best not to nit-pick on the details.

Reavers = Sansha, definitly.

Also, lowsec is 100% reaver space (ever try talking to a pirate gatecamp? like talking to a baby that is incapable of anything but swearing Smile).

How much herp could a herp derp derp if a herp derp could herp derp.

Sansha - turning people into mindless emotionless slaves
Blood Raiders - drain blood for all kinds of uses
Reapers - they'll **** us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into their clothing. (And if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order)

Honestly, that's only because there isn't an option to though P I mean, I know that if it was an option, many/most pirates would fly around like that, lol.

I'd put corpses on my freighter.

In EVE, the Bloodraiders are the closest you can come to the Reavers from Firefly.
The difference between the two are that the Bloodraiders are driven by cult-ish religious fervor (but are still more or less sane/human) while the Reavers are driven by violent, instinctual bloodlust (and possess no discernible ability to "reason").

My wife was a fan of Joss Whedon's mainstream shows like Buffy and Angel. That's why I even tried out watching Firefly, because Whedon is a known commodity, and I like his work.
The downside is that he kind of rehashed character types from each series. The archetype. For example the similarity of Kaylee to Willow from the Buffy series is pretty obvious.

As a result, my wife actually didn't like Firefly much....I think she saw too many of the Buffy characters in it. I however liked Firefly quite a bit, clearly there was a fully developed world behind it, but we never got to see it fleshed out enough before the series ended and the movie wrapped it up sort of post hoc.

My only issue with Firefly was the scale. It's essentially a single solar system, which seems somewhat limited for having full on empires, rebellions, and Sancha wannabe's flying about to hidden planets. Also- madness as a reason for being weird doesn't really work for me-- if you're too crazy to be reasoned with, little more than a berserker....but sane enough to operate space craft and not attack each other.....zombie movies always do that too.

You know Firefly wouldn't last long...there is entirely too much total crap to put on TV for anything good to squeeze in.

Serenity gave a little more explanation on the Reaver madness, but yes, it was all cut too soon for a better story to be solidified.
