Overview doesn't update distance

This has been happening for some time now at least 5 to 6 months it will randomly not update distance. It's not fun getting pointed and webbed by a ship you think your 90k away from. I know hitting tab will resolve the issue but in the heat of a fight it's not always easy to keep pressing tab. Is this an intended bug if not is there any way to resolve it other than pressing tab?
