Why do we pick politicians based on the promises they make?

Hello space friends

I have a question for all of you. It's the title of this thread. CSM candidates and political candidates in real life make speeches about how they think the game or the world should work, full of things they promise to do if they are elected. Once the votes are cast and the winners have been put in officer, we the people then quietly or loudly complain about the politicians we individually perceive did not give us what we want. Why is that?

In truth, politicians don't have the power to make sweeping changes because each individual politician is just one member of a group that makes decisions, or in the case of the CSM a group that hopefully influences decisions. Candidate X will promise you that he will advance Issue Y, knowing fully that he is literally incapable of doing so; but, he will say it straight to all of our faces, and we will vote for or against him based on it. I cannot be the only one here to think this is wrong! There is an alternative.

Candidates should plainly, earnestly and with open hearts ask the People what they want, and represent those desires.

For full disclosure, I am running for CSM7. But don't think of this is as a political advertisement for my candidacy. Think of this as a call out against every other candidate out there, and a challenge to every member of the voting public. Whether you vote for me or not, I hope that everyone reading this forum post will demand that the politicians they favor or oppose, in game or in real life, be held to the very simple standard of abandoning personal interests, abandoning lobby groups, abandoning power blocs, abandoning political or religious ideologies, and in place of all those abandoned things embracing their rightful role as a passionate advocate for the People.

I just want to go to Iceland and present to CCP the concerns and desires of the constituency.

You know, the good guys. The 99%. You.

No offense, but as a member of the ~most honorable~ Goonswarm federation there is really no point in giving you a vote. This is nothing personal, au contraire: your Apis melifera friends will guarantee that you will have the seat that you desire, so it would be really more economic to give out votes to candidates that may still struggle for every single vote to get into their desired position of power and influence.

But to answer your question: One wise man (unfortunately I have forgotten who exactly it was) once said that those people who desire power are exactly the same people that should be kept by all means from getting that power. Politicians want power over other people- the desire for power alone implies a desire to abuse that power. So they tell the people everything that the people wants to hear to achieve their goals.
The best politicians and leaders would be those who never wanted those positions, but got them by circumstances.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I don't care one bit about promises.

For example, with my three characters I plan to vote for 3 different people. I am making my decision on how they have conducted themselves on the forums and in game (if I know them in game). I don't care if they have a plan that includes my play style. I would rather be represented by someone with a different play style who is reasonable than someone who plays similarly as me but is a douche.

it's not that easy: there are always ~independent~ Goonswarm candidates that provide some entertainment if nothing else.

last year's favorite did emoragequit the race complaining it was rigged against him because he had forgotten to register for the vote match website despite several weeks notice.
of course quite a few people had already voted for him when he asked to be removed from the ballot Roll

@Lyris Thanks for the clarification. One more question:
Do you think it is possible for the kind of politician you speak of to separate the private from the political?
Can he truly represent the people's interests, prejudices, biases, ... without living the people's life?

I am not the endorsed candidate of Goonswarm, or of the Clusterfuck Coalition. That candidate is The Mittani, whom shall retain his position as chairman of the CSM by virtue of the Goonswarm/CFC voting bloc. I am in fact prohibited from campaigning on the goonfleet forums, and I am hereby reminding any Goonswarm/CFC members reading this to please pay heed to the voting applet that Solo Drakban will be installing on the forums within the next few weeks.

Then why don't other politicians besides myself make the simple promise that they will try to give the People whatever it is that they expressly want, rather than going into the arena with presupposed arguments for the people to pick? I have a single campaign promise: that I will passionately advocate the issues expressed by the constituency.

Why do more people watch Michael Bay's movies than Jim Jarmush's ?

Of course it is possible. People frequently live "double lives," or assume different behaviors and project different attitudes based on the context of their situations. The person you present yourself to be in the privacy of your intimate friends is likely not the same person you present yourself to be in the company of your elder family members, and these two persons you present yourself to be are likely different from the person you present yourself to be at work, to new acquaintances, or when volunteering at the Humane Society. We all wear different hats at different times, to paraphrase the euphemism, and I don't see why a person cannot simultaneously live for himself and passionately represent others beyond himself. Lawyers do it all the time, and so does anyone in a customer service job.

Wow an hypocrasy mobius loop.

The sentiments in your final statment are ideal qualities for a candiate.

Shame your a Goon and cannot be trusted to fulfill the "ideal" for the very corrupt reasons you are trying to convey for which you are renowned for.

Examples below in context in responce to the claims above.

On gameplay:

Lyris Nairn wrote:
Yes please. But you shouldn't let goons play. They use unfair griefer tactics.

On development priorities:

Lyris Nairn wrote:
It's not that the suggestions would negatively impact life in nullsec if implemented, it's that CCP has limited attention span and limited development resources to devote to all possible things. The more things that are on the plate for consideration, the less likely any specific thing will be considered, developed and implemented; so, by putting forth proposals for non-nullsec improvements our dear friend here is lowering the total chance that other proposals which positively effect nullsec will be considered, developed and implemented.

On power blocs:

Lyris Nairn wrote:
What is to stop any other group of people from banding together and having a voice exactly as loud as or louder than the collective voice of Goonswarm? I can think of exactly two things: first, that other groups of people lack the necessary organization or group cohesion to do it; second, that enough other people do not exist. If the first is the case, then one can hardly blame Goonswarm and her allies for being successful. That is generally regarded as a good thing, ya know. If the latter is the case, and literally the voice of Goonswarm is the loudest because there are more of us than there are players in every other group combined, then we honestly deserve to get everything we want because that is how a democracy works. Welcome to the tyranny of the masses.

I have nothing to fear from the quotes that you provided; in fact, I thank you for bringing them to public scrutiny. In each of the quotes you provided, I am speaking about the existing mechanics as I understand them of democratic bodies and of the CSM in particular. If you would like me to enumerate or expound on my opinions with regards to these issues, then I will be happy to entertain conversation on those topics; otherwise, I thank you for reading in my thread and for posting in it, and I hope you will reconsider your opinion of me come election time.
