How should we improve the inventory UI?

Even though it appears the devs are done with this thread (lack of responses and/or updates to fix anything), I will go ahead and post my grievances that are still present.

1) I am getting tired of having to close the Inventory Screen after I undock. I am happy they finally split the sessions, but it seems they are still tied together. Since I usually need to access my items/ships hangar while in station it is opened. Then when I undock in my ship the "in space" version opens, so I close it, unless of course I forgot to open my cargohold (which doesn't happen automatically anymore), in which case I then Shift Click my cargo, resize and move, then close the Inventory Screen. But the problem doesn't stop there, the next time I dock I have to click the Inventory button on the left so that it opens my items/ships hangar (since the Inventory Screen retains if it was open/closed between space and station).

2) The second most annoying thing is then when I change ships, my previous cargohold remains open and on screen. I have too many times to count dropped a necessary item in the old ships cargo then had to re-dock to search through my ships and properly move it to my current ships cargo. Please change this back to the level of intelligence it had before when it switched the cargo window to the active ship automatically.

3) For the love of Pete (sorry Pete, whoever you are), please default the in station Inventory Screen to the items hangar, not my cargo. I'm already looking at my cargo, I don't need a 2nd larger window to show me something I am already looking at in another window (pretty sure in the old system you could never open 2 windows with the same contents, it would just snap to the 1st instance if you tried).

4) I have noticed some level of randomness in how the tree is displayed when docking. Sometimes all the containers/ships are expanding, leading to aggravating levels of scrolling and clicking just to select the object I need. Sometimes when I dock just the ships are expanded, sometimes its just the station containers expanded, and sometimes nothing is expanded (this of course is the preferred outcome as it is simplest) .

If we don't get some dev responses soon I might have to start a new thread just to bring attention to the fact that this is far from fixed and still needs a lot of love. There were a few things I didn't mention just because they are repeatedly mentioned throughout this thread and still need addressed.

ISK per JUMP view Courirer Contracts.

IT might help improve ISK per Jump rewards, as the highest one will be the first to take.

The filter options can be minimized, which is great, even better, however, would be to SAVE the status of the filter options. So if I minimized them last, then all new windows should have the filter options minimized and the other way round.

Let me drag ships from the tree view.

Make wrecks vanish from the list of opened wrecks in the tree view once I am out of range of them. After opening several wrecks the whole tree view will be full of wrecks and in order to transfer items from the wrecks to my cargo hold, I have to either scroll or close a lot of wrecks.

Make it easier to close wrecks in the tree view. The little crosses are not so easy to hit.

When I open my cargo hold in station without the tree view, then select any items in there, then click the little arrows to show the tree view it will REMOVE MY SELECTION. Please make it remember this selection.

Thanks!

issue: after adding this new craptastic uni-invatory i cant just right click my ship to access those compartments (fuel) and such.

fix: re add the contextual menu items for these and make them alwase open a new window because when i do try and add fuel i am dragging from one to the other.

Its great making things better but don't remove every shred of how things use to work and force people to use your new crap for everything... ill like it allot more if i decide i like it than if you force me to use it....

ISSUE: Even if it's now categorized and renamed, finding that special module in a pos is still a pain in the a**
FIX: Add a filter to the tree in the Inventory UI where people can set for exemple meters (only see modules under X Km) and/or a filter by type of modules (SMA, Turrets, etc). There's tons af appliable filters.

Does this thread cover PI inventory management? Because if so I'd like to see a facility to allow corp members access to Customs Offices and launchpads.

Eventually, we are going to need the same functionalities that the regular stations have, Corps access, contract pickup and drop offs, maybe even market and trade options for PI items.

While the new "tree" is a great addition...and having the "arrows" to hide or show is great...

I'm REALLY missing the tabs when in station

Also the game RARELY seems to remember what I had open between docking and undocking....

just because I had a seperate window with my cargohold open is space... dosn't mean I wan't the station to either open that in the big inventory window with the tree (or sometimes just closing EVERYTHING!)

I wan't the same open there as when I last was in station (regardless of what station!)
...I ALWAYS have a small cargo bay window on the upper left... and the Inventory proper a big central window...showing the contents of my hangar at station - how hard is that to apply !

(In many ways I would at least just like to see a decent options window for the Inventory... the one selection possible now isn't really what I needed (the checkbox for "always open in new window"...which isn't very useful as one can shift-click anyways)
...something along the lines of setting up some default windows/category to open on entering station and also... an option to reenable tabs on the station inventory etc.)

ISSUE: No meaningful options to set, including having tabs instead or as well as tree
FIX: Add options!

(please CCP, try and stop fixing things that aren't broke or dysfunctional... we needed much more the ability to search within cans for example... that is something "broken" that needs fixing!)

The newly formed team Game of Drones is somewhat surprisingly not going to work on drones (for now at least), but instead we're going to take a stab at improving the inventory management UI in EVE. In an attempt to get it right, we're interesting in collecting feedback before we get our hands too dirty so it would make us happy as hell if you could list the biggest beefs you have with the current inventory UI. I was thinking about a format like this:

ISSUE: Explain your issue
FIX: How do you suggest we fix it?

Example:
ISSUE: The huge pile of windows that you end up with when performing simple inventory management tasks
FIX: Make it possible to manage your inventory through a single window that lists all the accessible inventory locations as well as making it easy to browse and drag items between them

Oh, and I'll fix lag while I'm at it, so no need to explicitly request that

Thanks in advance.

PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS. This is like giving a bike square wheels. What are you guys doing? Who asked for inventory to be changed? Why? Why not fix fighters? Why not fix the overview bugs? Why not ANYTHING ELSE but messing with something that was FINE THE WAY IT WAS?

What do you do, search through tons of threads and look for the least important request and then apply that?

The last issue I have with the UI is that when I drag items into a container the UI opens that container and closes the old one. If I wanted the destination container opened, then I would have double clicked on it!

That is all. Otherwise I'm satisfied with it.

The one issue I have, is when looting wrecks. I do not know if this has already been mentioned due to my unwillingness to go through 23 pages of text.

When looting a wreck, only have the wreck loot open by default. As it currently is, when you loot a wreck, after you select "Loot All", the wreck window closes and the full inventory opens. You have to hold shift, then open the wreck, then it will close. If this were default where it closes automatically after looting, it would make the looting process a bit easier.

Trading with other characters in station is a pain. The trade window always pops up behind where I keep my inventory window. Perhaps merge it into the inventory list, like you have with ship cargo and all?

In station when looking at the ship hanger I can find it very hard to find the ship I want (I am lucky enough to own a lot of ships). My ships are all named a bit randomly and I struggle to identify what ship is what. I would really appreciate it if the ship hanger view was organised like this:

Ship Hanger>
____________________________
Frigates:-
(ship type) - (ship name)
Imicus - Scout 1
Imicus - Probe Ship
Incursis - Daft Bat
Rifter - Zoom Zoom
____________________________
Destroyers:-
(ship type) - (ship name)
Eris - Fail Dic
____________________________
Cruisers:-
(ship type) - (ship name)
Rupture - Kill It
____________________________
Battlecruisers:-
(ship type) - (ship name)
None

etc etc etc

This way I could quickly find the ship I want from a list instead of looking at my randomly organised ships

a lot of well made and easily navigated UI systems utilise the keyboard to help easily navigate through folder structures, this is actually one of the genuinely awesome features of mac os. If you're in column view u can navigate through folder structures VERY fast.

also a keyboard cut and paste to move stuff around would be awesome. for example:

Click the UI window in the hangar to make it the focus window.
the left side structure part of the window has keyboard focus
press down on the keyboard till u get to your item hangar
press right to open it (and open the menu to the cargo containers)
the keyboard focus moves to the larger right section of the UI window.
u can navigate to what you want and hit ctrl+x to start moving some items (if theyre stacked itll ask u to select how many u want to move)
u press right on the keyboard till u get to an item on the left of the large right side of the UI, hitting left again shift the keyboard focus to the left side folder structure on the left side of the UI.
u navigate to where u want to items to go and u paste the items there with a ctrl+v.

for multiple items hitting ctrl+x will move all items selected regardless of stack size.

u can also use keyboard keys to open certain well used parts of the UI. for example:
Home key - opens Item Hangar
page up/down - jumps the open right side of the UI view up/down by a whole page.
End key - opens ship hangar.

havent checked to see if this is actually possible right now, possibly the latter stuff is with the escape > shortcuts menu but the cut and paste would be usefull and using keyboard arrows to get about the UI would also be useful!

Issue: Double clicking the spaceship in your station panel, doesn't open the container any more, but instead boards that same ship.

Fix : Short of changing the result of double clicking a ship when in captains quarters and in a ship, Ex. in your ship, it opens the cargo, when in CC it boards that ship...

Issue: When you have 15-30 ships in station, and you double click on the ship you just boarded, sometimes the inventory window opens the cargo of the ship you were in not the ship you ARE in.

Fix: get someone to fix it Cool

1. Dual Pane

2. Navigation buttons to go 'back'

3. Integrate the inventory and search into assets as well as corp assets.

Dual Pane idea: Click!

well as a suggestion, try to improve it by not removing fixed broken features.

Like before the last patch, it was kinda working. Since the last patch, it fails to memorize defaults, like i prefer everything in the detailed listview, without the icons, sorted by groups, size/category/meta removed. every time i open a different corphangar, or redock/undock/changeship/whatever happens, i have to set the cargohold up again, this is a bit irritating. Could you please fix what you have broken, but fixed before breaking it again please?

1. Every single property of every single object (that you can have in the inventory) in the game should be able to display as a column. For those objects that lack that property, just don't display anything.

2. Everything should be searchable, no matter where is it.

3. It should be possible to display items in a hierarchical view, that is, one view that contains all of your stuff no mater where it is.

4. Groping of items into a hierarchical based on item type. So it ill display a bit like the market....this way you will get all modules in one place and so on

5. Tagging of items
a) you should manually be able to tag any item with any number of tags
b) you should be able to create rules that will auto-tag any item with any number of tags. you should be able to access all properties of all objects to create these rules
c) you should be able to define an hierarchy of tags, which should be used when displaying items in "Tag-view"

6. When looking at something in the market you should be able to right click any item and select "search inventory" to see if you already have this and if so where it is and how it is used right now. This should be done in a small pop-up dialog where you should be able to click "more..." if you want the full item search. If you have access to stuff in your corp, it should also show items from there.

7. whenever searching or displaying items there should be an option to include corp items you have access to as well as your own stuff.

8. You should be able to give another character full access to all your stuff, like when you have several characters in one account or you have several accounts.

Finding peoples hangers from a large corp when delivering items is a massive pain. Can we have a way to search for members, so you don't have to manually scroll through the list.

Scrolling though 450 people when trying to reship quickly is not fun.
