Which Race's Ships Should I Train For?

I am finding myself disappointed with the performance of the ships I've had the pleasure of piloting as of late (Cormorant, Moa, etc.). I've only trained Caldari in the past. I have decided to take a month or so off from flying ships so that I can train up to a much better ship. I want to pilot frigates that are the fastest and hardest to lock onto, even if that means lower damage from my turrets and less HP. I would rather orbit enemies at close range than snipe. Is there one race that would cater to this type of play style, or does every race have a ship for each play style? I am just having a difficult time browsing for ships in the market, and it is timely to look at and interpret each ship's statistics, especially for a newer player. I want to train up to fly a tech 2, so I will be patient until I have the skills and ISK to fully fit and pilot a ship of this calibre. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am clueless when it comes to ships.

You're pretty much looking for frigates.

Assault frigs in particular are relatively boss, and getting a large buff soon. Since you appear to be skilled for gunboats, the Harpy is probably right up your ally. I personally prefer a rail harpy (skirmishes at around 20km), but an afterburner-fit blaster harpy does huge damage and can be rather hard to hit, though for a frigate the Harpy is a bit slow.

You might also look at the Caldari Navy Hookbill, which is extremely fast and rather tanky, though won't do as much damage as the Harpy. It uses missiles, though.

if you want to fly tackle in gangs, you might also like interceptors (though they generally aren't so good at direct combat). They pretty much exist to run around and hold onto things for gangs while everyone else shows up. The Caldari interceptors are generally considered a bit 'meh' though...the tackle ceptor, the Raptor, is very agile but significantly slower than most other ceptors.

You are asking for blaster boats. You may find pleasure in piloting Thorax, Brutix, Megathron.

At the other hand you are most likely asking the wrong question. A ship is a utility to get stuff done. If the ships doesn't fit to the stuff you intend to do you will find yourself between a rock and a hard place, no matter what ship your fly. So what do you want to do?

If you take all the sand out of the box, only the cat poo will remain.

So what do you want to do?

Mission until I am fit to fly PvP. And like I said before, orbit at close-range, travelling at high velocity, while being hard to target. DPS isn't my main focus.

Those ships are all slow.

Don't stop flying about, you'll be bored.

For missions, go larger then frigate. Frigates are only good in level 1 and maybe some level 2 missions. Any higher level missions need Destroyer / Cruiser / Battlecruiser / Battleship size to be done (in that order, from lower level up to high level missions).

For pvp:

1.) Assault frigates = above avg speed, can be nice tackle + some DPS, great ships to do frig roams in.
2.) Interceptors = great ship in fleets with slower ships, slower guys count on you to burn to target at high-speed to tackle it so it is still there when the slow guys arive.
3.) Global fast frigate = *Yes here it comes again* the Rifter, put a speed-tank on it and it can do some damage while outrunning other peoples guns *with the exception of missiles, but on those you can outrun most of the explosion velocity*.
4.) One of the fastest ships (and really hard to kill) = Dramiel, it is the king at speed-tanking and kiting. Really hard to dictate the range against 1 of those as likely he can outrun you (even if you web him he is likely still faster then you are)

It's good to have a cruiser as backup for some really hard lvl 2 missions, where destroyer gets killed quickly.

Fairly certain the point of the question was "you're always fit to pvp"

just head out to low and have some fun, avoid the camps and you can meet some very interesting people.

Here are some fun fits that are somewhat.... not normal Pirate

(Save the Crazy Dual Rep Rifter for when you know what you're doing, that is one batshit insane frigate to fly... hull fighter)

Ok, so I decided on the Rifter. Suprisingly, it requires barely any training to fly...Why is this? Which fit do you recommend for me to use for a move to lowsec to find something new to do besides trade and mission like I do in high-sec?

If you have a ton of cash you could try Dramiels even in their current nerfed state their still not to be trifled with, or a republic fleet firetail.

I've got about 70 mil on hand, and about the same amount wrapped up in markets. But I've decided on the Rifter, and I'm leaning toward this loadout: 150 DPS, 4500 EHP Shield Tank Rifter.
I think that'll be just the right amount of ISK to put into it without going completely apeshit when (not if) I get killed. Hopefully I don't get podded, my implants were expensive Shocked
What do you guys think?

Well, I took my Rifter out for a spin for some factional warfare. I got podded.

Well what did you expect? You got ambushed 5 vs 1.

Keep in mind that with your low skills and your meta 0 modules, you don't fly a 150 DPS, 4500 EHP Shield Tank Rifter.
Unless you're lucky or a very capable pilot you'll be a free kill for most other players when you get caught.

Skill up, try a destroyer or better: find someone to fly with.
And at least try to get some meta 1-4 modules if you can't fit T2.

It wasn't an ambush, we had 6 or 7 guys, 4 who decided to wimp out when we ordered the fleet to warp. So it was me and two others. Also, I wasn't fitted with the 150 dps 4500 ehp yet, had some training left.

one thing about getting in real close to other ships is you can get neuted out. Nothing worse then sitting there pointed/webbed with no cap left. Just watching your ship get blown up Sad
