Sorry for the noobness but, if I want to fly say a rifter of a cruiser or an assault frigate how do i know what skills are need to fly that ship so I can train those skills? HOw do I figure that out? Do I download builds from battleclinic and use what skills evemon tells me to train or is there a way to figure out what slills are need without downloading fits? Thanks all...

If you look at the info window for each ship you have the prerequisites which are the skills you need to fly the ship itself, then next to that is the Recoomended tab which lists the certificates that would be most useful to have to use the ship in its general purpose. If you check your character sheet, below the skills section is one for certificates where you can browse the certificates and view the skills needed to reach each level.

These are, of course, only recommendations but you can use the certificates as a general guide for what skills will be most useful to you overall and when flying a particular ship. On top of that you can browse the loadouts posted on Battleclinic or on Failheap to figure out some good fits for that ship.

EFT or EveHQ can be useful as well

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...

If you add a Battleclinic fit to EVEMon skillplan, you get list of all skills required by the actual ship + all modules used in that fit. So that is usefull when you want to train for certain fit. (You get this same information ingame if you check "Show Info" for ship and all the modules one by one, and then check requirements-tab of each one.)

But that only lists skills required by ship and modules and not other skills you might want or need. e.g. without Electronics V (which gives more CPU for all ships) you might find that you can't actually create that fit even through you have all skills for ship and modules - because you still don't have enough CPU in your ship.

Go to Character Sheet -> Certificates -> Open Certification Planner. Certificates listed in "Core" section are basic certificates usefull for allmost all ships. You don't need to train them all at once (hey, after 1 year in EVE I still don't have all Core Standard certificates), but at least check them out and train what you think will be usefull.

Well easiest way to needed minimum skills is to download EVEmon as well then you paste a fit from EFT to EVEmon and it tells you exactly how will it minimally take to use all the modules & ship of the fit in question.

Or you could save your self the head ache and train core competency elite certificate which pretty much ensures that you have good support skills for about any possible T1 ship.
