Create a true "hybrid" weapon system

A proposal I’ve made in other threads before, but felt it needed the trial by fire that is the ideas forum…

Remove Blasters and Railguns and combine them into 1 weapon system, namely a Hybrid turret. The new hybrid turret has the same signature resolution as it has now. 40m for small, 125m for medium, 400m for large and 1000m for XL. But, the ammunition loaded into the new hybrid turret determines the rest of the stats such as tracking speed, damage multiplier, optimal and falloff range, cap usage, etc. I would take the average of Laser and Projectile weapons for the stats on these, or possibly 2 types of ammunition, high damage/low tracking and low damage/high tracking. Personally, I’d prefer the average, but that’s not for me to decide.

Now, we have a true “hybrid” weapon system, both short-range and long-range in the same turret. A weapon system able to choose engagement rage by swapping ammo, which is its unique and defining feature.

So you want the ability to pick engagement range in-battle (rather than fitting a type of weapon beforehand) and change up all the major stats of the weapons while you're at it. Lemme guess, you also want to be able to do any damage type and reload instantly too, don't you?

Actually, this isn't a half bad idea. At the moment in the current fleets in null, gallente, and hybrids fit in nowhere. Which just sucks. This would give quite a bit of versatility to a gallente fleet, if you get ontop of a target(s), you could do high damage, if you are kiting/being kited, you load range. Artillery have their niche, alpha, beams are pretty useless, pulse have strong optimal and consistent damage. Ac's have falloff. Hybrids, even after this patch still don't fit in to current fleet styles, tengu fleet, munin fleet, abaddon/armor t3 fleet, arty baddon fleet, arty mael fleet.

I doubt ccp would ever go for this idea, but i like it.

Supported. The 2 extremes (long and short range) are useless. Turn it into one medrange weapon, as occupied by guns that don't fail (AC/scorch pulse).

Any attempt to turn impractical ranges into "niches" is like saying "your niche is to be losers, since the winners' niches are taken."Lol

Ability to pick engagement range in battle...yes, it makes them unique and adaptable. To a limited extent all turrets have this ability within their engagement envelope by swapping ammo/crystals, some have much broader ranges than others.
This new turret would have the same ability, just over a much larger range profile. The drawback is, their damage is average compared to projectiles or lasers.

Hybrids should stay kinetic/thermal only.

Instant ammo swapping is lasers territory. We can leave reload at 5 seconds, or even bump it back up to 10 seconds. 5 seconds seems like a nice middle ground and would actually fit with this new turret.

Thank you. I share the same doubt.

It seems such a daunting task for CCP to balance both Railguns and Blasters and at the same time account for a lot of variation in usage between both Gallente and Caldari ships (ie. Naga vs. Talos) along with the ship bonuses. My hope is that simplifying the weapon system by combining it might bring some versatility to the hybrid ships and open them up for more routine use.

At the very least, maybe give them an alternative idea to play around with in their ongoing balancing efforts.

So basically you want to fit autocannons with Hail, Barrage, EMP, and I think Photon is the long range em one.

I am OK with making up close battling ships, just don't make me do it in a brutix that moves like a cow and can't hit anything that is right in it's face. Seriously every time I climb into a brutix I feel like the fat kid in dodge ball.

I honestly think PoCo based sov is a good idea https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1417544

Supported. The fact that combat is limited to either close range or extremely long range for every ship is rather boring. Plus it makes sense with Gallente drone abilities as most time drones fit into the mid-range field.
