Strategic Cruisers?

Hello veteran PvPers of EVE,

I have a noob question for you. I enjoy exploration and being the person behind the scenes that scores that massive asteroid field, discovers that bountiful hacking node, scans down that large archaeological site, and sows millions only to reap billions later. I heard about tech 3 strategic cruisers and how they were different from any other ship in EVE, but I wanted to ask is what they are commonly used for.

Going to leave EVE for a bit and try another game, but when I come back I am going straight back to my passion of exploration.

1. How are they commonly used? What function do they serve in fleet warfare?

2. Do they provide any bonuses to exploration/covert ops?

3. How can a lone-wolf like me possibly find use out of them?

90% of strategic cruisers are destined to be used by an alt at a safespot with ECCM modules and gang links activated.

Horse$hit....

There are a ton of uses for Strategic cruisers....

Yes, they are used in Fleet PvP for boosting (they give amazing boosts).

They also have tons of additionally roles:
Lokis are used in many PvP fleets for their webs (especially AHAC type fleets).
Tengu fleets are more rare, but extremely powerful when pulled off.
Proteus is a favored bait ship, and used in many fleets for their tackle range.
Legions are one of the favored Incursion ships, and also make appearences in AHAC fleets.

The Tengu has become a PvE favorite of mission runners and plexers, especially in lowsec.

Many of the strategic cruises make good exploration boats... as they can scan down a site, switch fits, and then competently run the sites.

OP:
Not sure where you're doing your exploration, speaking from the use of my Tengu, it works I would say perfectly for highsec scanning. (I'm not sure about lowsec or nullsec). Reason I say it works great for highsec is you can pretty easily fit one as an excellent scanner and even with 4 highs for missiles easily take out any of the scanned sites. (I have yet to do any scanning since crucible so others may have some input since crucible changes).

If you get an escalation you simple dock and swap out your modules and fit it for pve and you can easily complete any L4 or equivalent difficulty escalation wise in your sleep. Otherwise other than mining sites, the Tengu can do any site you can fit it into without ever having to change ships or modules.

This has been my experience, and this has all been done in highsec with escalations of course sometimes leading to lowsec.

Though I agree, they are also commonly used on an alt as the other poster pointed out Blink

Can it fit a covops cloak and be viable in lowsec scanning? I plan on perhaps grouping with a corp and doing wormhole exploration.

Thank you all for your answers.

My buddy swears buy cloaky Proteus for low sec scanning.

I wanted to paint my space ship red, but I couldn't find enough goats.

I've fit a cloak on it before for scanning when I was paranoid, or trying other sneaky things Twisted but since I havn't done any lowsec scanning, I dont know the difficulty level and how you would subsequently need to fit the ship to make it viable.

My guess is in lowsec, you'll fit for scanning, find something, maybe poke ur nose in, and then refit accordingly. Unlike highsec where you can really do a one fit for everything and not have to refit except for an escalation.

if your going to do that you mise well have 2 ships one to scan and one to run, cloak really just for gate and not sitting in your site one you see combat probes. All ships for scanning/running site should cloak. Ever scanned a 7/10 get to the last room only to have a fleet come in and take it? I have only needs to happen once. Also speed, once you drop probes the clock is ticking, some one will take note and one you don't leave system for 10+ mins you better believe some ones looking to kill you or take your prize or both.

I love numbers. I'm 100% serious.

Be sure to fly some exploration T3s in essence and black rise low sec, with mods worth at least 2.5b. Thank you.

"Tengu fleets are more rare" What? Tengu fleets are the only tech III fleets ffs. And they are quite powerful. You don't see Loki fleets, etc. The other tech IIIs are all weaker in pve and pvp.

Lokis and Proteuseseses are sometimes flown as tackle support in other fleet configurations (but they compete on isk efficiency with throw away huggies and lachesisisisis). The only place where the Legion shiines is incursion vanguards, but an absolution is just as good maybe better in that role. Either Tengu should get nerfed (or heavy missiles) or the other tech III buffed.

And, most importantly, CCP should make warfare links only work on grid and end the ss'd unprobably tech III booster bullshit

You know what, to make life easier for everyone responding to this, I am just going to make a list of what I want out of a tech 3 ship.

Things that I need it to do;

-Scan down exploration sites as efficiently (or more so) than a covops frig.
-Can fit a covops cloak.
-Can clear said exploration sites and reap their benefits without trouble.

Things that I would like it to do;

-Have a reasonable chance of taking on baddies in a lowsec node/other players and survive.
-Be able to equip every single mod needed to harvest nodes in exploration sites and still have combat capability.

If I ever joined a large corp and wanted to help out in fleet warfare;

-Be able to fit a cyno (or even a covert cyno)

Please let me know if I deserve to be tossed into an asylum for expecting that much from a strat cruiser.

You can do all of what you want above with them, based upon the difficulty of the site, it may require you to refit to maximize your combat abilities, but you will still only need the one ship.

What you'd like to do I think you'll run into issues of how efficiently you pve vs pvp you'll prbly be trading one for the other is my guess, but my experience is more limited with this.

Cyno ill let someone else chime in.

TL:DR

Yes, you can do all those with one ship, sometimes may need to change some fittings.

SoT/DarkSide runs an all-Loki fleet. Works pretty good for their purposes, near as I can tell. PL previously ran a Legion-heavy AHAC fleet. Obviously you are never going to see an all-Proteus fleet, but it's just not true that only it's only Tengus.

If you want a lesson on Tengu uses, I recommend encountering the Hatchery. They seem pretty efficient, never flown with them ;)

The Loki is a great 'patrol' ship if you will for 0.0. Webs, point, fair speed and enough tank to last while your buddies show up to get on the KM of whatever you managed to tackle. Really hacks off cyna and vaga pilots who (quite mistakenly) think they're immune to the game of eve because they can manage a fair turn of speed. Bubbles are your friend. I guess other T3s can probably be fit suitably but I've had some success in the Loki so there you have it.

Tengu fleets in 0.0 can be terrifying if you're on the other end. I've watched them take down supers like they weren't even there... The Tengu also manages PVE with little effort on the part of the pilot. Proper logi support and they're really horrific.

No Proteus experience here - though it's on the list if a bit far down.

Legion... I liked the HAM legion a bit tho see no advantage over the tengu.. not sure about much else. Fair add to an armor HAC gang I guess? Have to defer to other's knowledge here.

T3 ships have a solid place among small to mid size gangs.

Generally speaking, everyone of them has a role in a fleet, just depending on the fleet composition and what your end goal is. Train for what you want to fly and enjoy the game.

Or train for all 4, Sandbox and what not :)

I ran a double repped Tengu in Gurista space, it could scan down and solo 10/10 plexes.

From what everyone is saying, the Tengu appears to be the way to go. Pirate

So how would I outfit said Tengu? What skills would I need and what mods would I use? (I am hoping I can fit a probe launcher and covops on there. Don't want anyone sneaking up on me in low/nullsec/Wspace.)

I love me a juicey T3 fleet :) But on a serious note, T3's are seen as the best ship to fly in wormholes due to getting the tank of a battleship, rep loving resists, usually some form of tackle bonus, and in some cases the dps of a battleship in a cruiser sized package to avoid mass issues.

As far as solo stuff the tengu is really quite amazing if fit up properly and assuming you're not going to have to deal with neuts

Thanks for the advice!

So I am thinking 5 launchers /w shield tank and webs/scramblers for any pvp action.

However my preferred setup would be a covops cloak, probe launcher, and 3 missile launcers.

As for the meds, should I fit a shield tank or could I squeeze in a couple of node harvesters?
