Cargo Containers

I have an idea.

Would it be possible to make it so the cargo containers could be some how connected to eachother so you could make a bigger one then say the Giant secure cargo containers?

Like take two Giant secure containers and attach them to where they can now hold 7800m3 instead of the normal 3900m3.

I believe they're called POSes and they are used for out-of-station storage of large amounts of materials, ships, etc. as they have structures large enough to hold this.

In other words, your change would obsolete one of the big reasons to maintain a POS.

Im not saying lets get rid of the pos they are really nice. But since you cant really pop up a pos in say 05 and higher without a ton of rep, why not just be able to connect say two to 4 secure giant containers? You wouldnt be able to fit most ships in to it heck the devs could set it up so that ships couldnt be stored in them.

Also they would only last the normal amount of time just like any other can 29 days then poof they are gone if left out in space that is.

Conceptually it is not a bad idea, but I am trying to think of ways it can be abused, and how it would affect existing mechanics. For example, all you would ever see in hisec belts is giant chains of these cans looped together. If not in belts, then on the directional scanner. The "in belts" option also makes me worried about enabling botting even more, and rendering moot the fact that mining ships have limited cargoholds.

There is also the nonsensical issue of being able to put something too big for one container into multiple containers (even if it's not a ship). That would at least have to be a limitation -- the biggest item you put in can be no bigger than the smallest container in the "chain". But the issues I listed before still remain.

Oh i understand Im just thinking lets limit them to say null sec to .6 systems that way you wont see them in.7 and up. Now on the bot issue why not limit it to just ore and only an indy's can be used to pull the ore out? If you got other ideas throw them out there im just here trying to put my two cents in on makeing the game a bit more enjoyable for the miner and the macro killer.

edit:

Heck they could also limit you two only useing Giants with Giants and Large with Large. And also limit you to only haveing say two rigged containers or 3 of them to one belt or system depending on how they are used

It doesn't really solve the bot issue. What I'm saying is it's presumably easier to create bot scripts that mine and then dump it in a can, compared to bots that mine and have to haul it to a station. As for an indy hauling it out -- indys can be pretty big.

I don't have any alternative super-suggestion other than a POS myself, as I don't mine P. I dunno, I'd like to hear others' opinions too.

im all for many container ideas and i like this one its great but the 1 thing i dont like about containers is they last for ever! my oppinion they should put a month time limit on containers in 1 months time the container has been harshly treated by the elements and debrie of space and is destroyed unless you actively unanchor the can scoop it up launch it again and anchor it again wich would reset the timer on the can.

Wrong.
Disposable jetcans fall apart after...2 hours, I believe.
Anchored containers last for 30 days, with the timer resetting each time it's accessed (the ship accessing it automatically repairs it, I guess).
Unanchored non-jetcans...not sure how long they last, but it's not forever.

EDIT: +1 to OP. Though with a modification- you should need to anchor a ministructure to attach them to.

..Hm...this whole thing could be tied into the "smallholding" thing.

maybe we can call the structure a "Control Tower", and the can a "Corporate Hangar" ?

seriously, there's no need for this "weld x cans together for more space" nonsense. Bots will abuse it to hell, and the bots that don't will just be using an orca.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

To me it not nonsense. It is an idea for people with or without access to corporate hangers at a pos or other wise.

And if im not mistaken most of the bots i have seen sofar if they are high enough have an orca or two sitting next to them already. So this mod would really be for the lonely miner that either has no corp or is in a corp that doesnt do alot of mining.
