Personally speaking, I'm in favour of strong leadership ruling with the informed consent of those being led.

That's always seemed the right balance to me, and it works in lots of areas, too!

The problems always start when either the leadership is weak, they lead without consent, or that consent is based on falsehoods and manipulation.

But a strong hand providing solid guidance is not the same as a dictator.

I adhere to the principle that extremes are generally bad, and that balance is the way forward. Of course, there are cases where this middle ground stops working, and then you need to take a strong stance. Which one is more appropriate, well, that is entirely situational. But in the end, coming back to a balance that works for the system as a whole is always needed.

Without understanding honorable forfeiture of the self for the cultivation of the State, applying a diluted political term like "populism" is a futile gesture and defeats the purpose of the question.

As many have more eloquently alluded prior, there's not much difference between tyranny dictated by many or a few. Media, special interests groups, and personal ambitions are all factors that corrupt politicians and manipulate the masses. We can see that with the blight of public executions to audience cheers and politicians all to eager to trade its people's freedoms for comfort and security.

The goal of an informed and responsible citizen in a representative democracy is to elect men of integrity to best represent the needs of all and respect the principles on which this nation was founded. The reality is that money and power talks, and with the right influence anyone can be persuaded. All I can say is thank Goddess I'm a capsuleer, because at least I know if someone doesn't like me they at least have the courtesy to shoot at me!
