Character Creation

Everything I read online seems dated - is there *any* difference in gameplay between race/bloodline/history/academy besides starting location and what ships you start with?

I got a week in with a Gallente pilot and decided that I was lacking aim, so started another character - Minmatar this time, but I find the space seems dark - caldari space has too many stars in the background for me to see well - Can I be a minmatar pilot flying caldari ships in gallente space?

Is there no restriction on what you can do with enough time for training?

Other than race/ships/empire, I'm fighting between trade and security, and I can't find a way to "taste" the different possibilites (seems like it would take a month just to get up to the point to get started with any given occupation to see what it's like when it's serious - and I dont' want to spend 3-6 months before *starting* my career...)

Any responses to any of these thoughts are *greatly* appreciated!

Thanks!

I can't be 100% sure since I haven't created a character in a long time, but nowadays every race starts with the same base attributes (this wasn't always true, which is why Ursula here is Caldari Achura). The race you choose will determine your starting location as well as which racial frigate skill you'll begin with. I believe the academy you choose will determine which bonus skills you'll begin with, though this too might have changed (it probably hasn't).

You can be anything flying anything anywhere in high-security space, unless and until your standings (which means how various NPC organizations view you) begin to worsen. Essentially, regardless of character creation choices, everyone begins with a blank slate. Outside of high-security space, you might get blown up by another player. Actually, that's inevitable.

You can also get blown up by another player in high-security space, by the way. It's significantly less likely outside of specific circumstances, though. I don't want to confuse you, but that has to be mentioned.

Aside from having to purchase skill books, time (and by extension, attribute spread and attribute implants) is the only limiting factor.

One thing you can do is perhaps look up EVE University (Google it, check their Wiki) and join their public chat channel in-game if you want to be inundated with some basic info about what's available to you. It's a good way to get your feet wet and get advice from people who're dedicated to being helpful.

In EVE what you start as doesn't matter.

The only minor differences:

* How you look and dress.
* Which region you start in.
* Which NPC corp you start in.
* Your default NPC corp.
* Racial Frigate 2 and Small Racial Turret 3, which take 6 hours to train for any other race with default attributes.

Of course you can move to any region and even do the tutorial missions for another race if you choose.

Starting Attributes

20 intelligence
20 memory
20 perception
20 willpower
19 charisma

I recommend 23i 21m 21p 17w 17c as a generic mapping when you don't know what you will be training.

Starting Skills

Electronics 3 (8,000)
Engineering 3 (8,000)
Shield Operation 2 (1,415)
Gunnery 2 (1,415)
Small [Racial] Turret 3 (8,000)
Mining 2 (1,415)
Mechanic 2 (1,415)
Navigation 3 (8,000)
Science 3 (8,000)
Spaceship Command 3 (8,000)
[Racial] Frigate 2 (2,829)

Total = 8,000 * 6 + 1,415 * 4 + 2,829 = 56,489

Also whether or not can you join a corporation whose CEO doesn't have Ethnic Relations V.

Good point, though it isn't usually an insurmountable problem.

You can run a 6300 member corp of all races with a CEO that has Corporation Management level 1 and no Ethnic Relations skill.

The CEO's skills are only applied to the corporation when the CEO clicks a button Update With My Skills. Don't touch that button, and you can change CEOs and still retain the same max corp size as the CEO with skills.

We hired someone with max skills to update our corp which allows for 6300 members of all races, and create an alliance.

I personally have Corporation Management 3 (30 other people) and Ethnic Relations 2 (12 of them can be of other races), which was enough for a small corp.

Thanks for the replies - I will check out the university, because this universe is vast and daunting

I have been playing on my Minmatar pilot tonight, and at least I'm going through the noob missions much more quickly now that I've already done them! I figure once I log for the night I'll put myself on autopilot and fly the 2 hours to Clellinon - unless there's a better hub in Gallente space (that's where I started and have been living on my first pilot)

I would like to RP in the future, so the race/bloodline/background is important to me, but I wanted to know if I'd be stuck flying ships that look like bugs! What?

I tried in chat to ask these questions and everyone said I better stick to one career and learn it really well (i.e. mining) and don't waste time on other skills or my pilot will be crap. I guess those guys were just jerks! I want to enjoy the game since I'm paying for it, and I'd like to find a way to enjoy it as much as possible. There's just too much to taste on my own, so I have to base my decisions on second hand knowledge and experiences :-)

On that note, if anyone has any tips for me, I welcome them! (I dream of being Han Solo, but I'm not sure the MF exists in EvE...I guess jack-of-all-trades is me. If anyone has played other MMOs I was a druid in WoW and in EQ (original Verant) I was a Bard, if that helps!)

In a small way the people who are telling you to stick to 1 thing are right. It IS better (not mandatory) to kind of stick to 1 or 2 professions for 1 reason only, if you have a character that can use all different guns usually means they can only use them at average level when they are fairly new players, if one specialize in a certain gun type they (at the same skillpoint level) can use them better then the pilot that has skills across the board.

But this is not a real limitation, most pilots start out not knowing what they want to do and how they want to do it, so my main suggestion: Do what you like, EVE is a game and a sandbox, anything goes as long as you want it.

If you want to do multiple things, you can, it might take a bit more time to get to the same level as someone who only specifies in for instance Minmatar PvP ships, but you will get there.

If you want to do multiple things well you're better off with an alt, I made my self an alt for T2 research and he has now over 20mil SP in just science alone.
Since you can train only one char per account that means I saved several months of game time, while training combat skills for the main char.
Ofc. not everyone care or can afford an alt and some people have literally farms of alt for every possible scenario but it's up to you if you want to go that route.
