What would you do?

So, I'm a returning player, who didn't really play all that much the first time around. Because of this, I'm still pretty fresh and I have an unclear path ahead of me.

I want to build things. Components, weaponry, ships, I vaguely remember reading about researching blueprints to improve the results and hell, I'd even like to get into that, but I don't know how to get there.

I'm having one of my characters learning all he can about mining and hulks and such so that I can hopefully stockpile myself with a great quantity of materials, but beyond that I'm blind as to what I need to do. I have more than two billion ISK to get myself started, so that shouldn't be a problem.

So here is my question. How would you go about it? What would you learn?

Please bear in mind I've forgotten pretty much everything except how to navigate around the user interface, so please go easy with any abbreviations and such.

I'm assuming that you're gonna be selling this stuff for profit...

1. Industry 5 (build stuff faster)
2. Production Efficiency 5 (no player-introduced waste)
3. Standings with some corporation (less taxes)
4. Trade skills (less taxes, more orders, etc)

Minerals you mine ARE NOT FREE. Though, you'll quickly find that sourcing minerals from one or two mining toons takes a long, long time and you'll eventually start sourcing the bulk of the minerals from the markets.

Look at your local markets, sell what's needed (if you can make a profit), and go from there. Jumping right into ships is a bad thing (well, small stuff should be OK) mostly because the margins are already razor thin, and you can't really afford to buy a 300m BC BPO and then let it sit for 2-3 months (or more) so you can properly research it.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Also if you are dead set at building things with expensive BPO, look in the contracts - you may find pre-researched BPOs at a price that is just a bit over what ME0 PE0 print costs off NPCs. Plenty of people look to dump blueprints they no longer build from. Saves the time and ISK it takes to research a BPO to a level where you can build something out of it profitably.

(and no, practically no Tech 1 blueprint is profitable without research. The waste at ME0 is more than the profit margins)

Personally I have bought most of my BPOs off contracts even if I have access to research in a POS - time is ISK and if one can save a week or two of ME research for just a bit more over the raw BPO cost, it just makes sense.

While I'd recommend for most starters to start with ammo, you've got enough in the bank to move to ships and rigs. T2 is profitable, but it'll take a great deal more research on your part. And math. And skills.

Pretty much:
Ammo
t1 rigs
ships
T2 modules.

You might notice no T1 modules in there. That's because the margins are /tiny/. The only place I'd suggest creating them is for T2 module materials.

You will not be able to mine enough to keep yourself in minerals. A manufacturer (especially ships) can blow through millions of units in just a couple of hours.

Skills:
Production Efficiency 5. This is your most important skill.
Mass Production. Advanced Mass production. For multiple lines of production.

Research skills. Not /needed/, as you can buy researched BPCs from contracts. But not a bad idea to get. Research and metallurgy. And patience if you're not going to run a POS (another place to do math, to ensure you're not wasting your money)

As for how far to research a BPO, there's a calculator in my Sig. Waste free Blueprints are possible, but other than ammo and rigs, they're a bad idea. Spending millions to avoid wasting 10k isk. on a 27million isk item. Work out an appropriate value for yourself. Enough to cut the waste to an acceptable level. Don;'t be stupid with research. I've seen people selling rig blueprints with an ME of 300. when all waste is eliminated at 20.

Woo! CSM XI!

1. Train skills as Velicitia wrote plus Mass Production 5 + Advanced Mass Production 4.
2. Research market, which products are profitable, e.g. http://eveeye.com/profit.asp
3. Buy some Blueprint originals (BPO) or Blueprint copies (BPC) that are researched (but don't buy Battleship blueprint, too expensive).
4. Make good excel sheet to calculate profits accurately.
5. DO NOT MINE, you will not be able to mine enough minerals for personal use anyway.

Please note that profitable products vary every day depending on input and output prices.

2 bil is good start for industrial career.

- Buy BPOs you think are profitable.
- Research.
- Manufacture.
- Try and sell. Take notes on what shifts.
- Buy more BPOs.
- Repeat.
