I made a 14-day trial account before knew about the buddy program. Can I add a buddy code to the account I made or would I need to create a new account to take advantage of the buddy program? I don't see an obvious way to add the code right now.

All forms of extended trial must be made from the beginning that way, existing trails can only be extended by making them full accounts.

Only full accounts can create the extended trials for their friends.

Hmm, so I can't even get him the free month (I think that's what the invitor gets) even if I didn't get the extra 7 days? Bummer.

Correct, to make use of the Buddy Invite you need to make a new account (with a new toon). If you are still in your trial period, this is still viable as you won't miss much skills you already trained.
