Six Weeks into the game, Impressions So Far

I wanted a challenge, complexity…something extremely well thought out with systems within systems of game play in a huge universe. Well I certainly found it and then some.

I had heard rumors that Eve was sorta’ like a big spreadsheet with no warmth, just a bunch of corporations protecting each other against a few pirates, and lowsec DOMINATED by people who want to kill you, along with slow and mundane starship combat and probably an obsolete game engine.

These rumors were wrong on all accounts. Instead, as soon as I get into space I literally went “COOL!” when I saw my ship form a warp tunnel and the planets and sun shoot by. I get on the gate, and then I had to blink and double take when my ship disappeared with some kinda’ weird distortion bubble and jump through the gate. To my knowledge, there are no other modern games that get celestial spacing and planetary navigation somewhat believable.

And the universe, it’s maddeningly huge! The number and variety of players is also quite enormous, and they all have their own goals and agendas, from nefarious to generous, aggressive to timid, and powerful to poor.
I also cannot help but marvel at the extreme intelligence of the average eve player – but superior intelligence yields superior ego; there is certainly a LOT of arrogance to go around!

The most daunting thing about eve is also the most appealing. There are so many places to go, people to see, and things to do, that no one person can ever master this game. There will always be some place you haven’t been, some corporation behind the scenes you are unaware of, and some kind of profession or task you haven’t tried. For this reason, it took me a long time to figure out what to do and which corporation to join.

I did not want to be one of those people who bounce from one corporation to another at the drop of a hat. When I built my toon I initially thought that building a small industrial and trade empire might be my profession, but there were simply too many places to go and look at for me to bother with economics and the technical drudgery of industrialism (maybe later). I could try mining – again a similar issue.

Mission running? I hate working for the man, or woman. I was so happy when I completed the dull story and leash of the Sisters of Eve mission arc. I was expecting to get a faction ship or something out of it…but not so much. People ask me why I don’t really have any empire standings. It is because I value my freedom. So again, maybe later.

Aah but exploration – now there was a possibility IF I could make it profitable. Imagine, heading out to places unknown, scanning down abandoned treasures, killing nasty NPC pirates, and evading real pirates – yes this was it! BUT my goodness there is a real skill to it. The frustration of exploration can be extreme, especially when someone else got there first or you get caught by pirates. But that one day when I made 30 million off of a couple of radar sites, that was the day I knew that the profession could work. After days of learning, getting podded by pirates, and all manner of frustration I finally began to learn how to make that income somewhat steady.

Finally it was time to choose a corporation. From my treks into low sec and null sec I grew tired of being afraid. This meant that I had to learn something about PvP – there were no two ways about it. The idea of the nullsec ‘blob’ fleets did not appeal to me. I would be less likely to have the up-close and personal kind of combat that really refines skills and builds confidence as part of a huge fleet. This left piracy, or some kind of war-target rich situation as options. I love pirates, the rebellious streak, the love of freedom, the rum, the characters, the pets, jack sparrow, and all the pomp and circumstance.
So I talked with a really good pirate corp and almost threw in with them. Unfortunately becoming an outlaw would mean restrictions into empire space that I did not want, and a lot of work to rebuild sec status (being as freedom loving as I am, this wouldn’t work either).

I needed a corp where I could learn, but also have the freedom of coming and going as I pleased. Eve Uni?? Meh maybe but it sounded sooo…noobish. Someone recommended RvB – Red versus Blue. I had heard of them, I liked that they were named after the humorous youtube videos. They had a large corporation. So I went for it and applied for Red Federation. I am so glad I did, as my application was accepted when I woke up the next day.
Of course there was a lot of corporation literature to review, justified by the size of this perpetually wardecced organization. Later research saw that the number of kills for RvB combined far out-did Goonswarm, and Red Federation alone stays neck-and-neck with the Goons.

I was offered basic training by the patient and skilled Delucian (who is in Blue Republic), got my first fleet operation, and my first kill. Wow what fun!! These guys play this game of small-fleet chess every day with their counterparts. And the climaxes are oh-so-thrilling and glorious. But more than that, I have little restriction on where I can go (unless of course, we have 3rd party wartargets camping certain locations, which happens. If too many of them harass RvB we unite, go to Purple, and open up a huge can of purple woopass to take down expensive wartarget ships – that is the most satisfying whoopass).

I still love exploration. I will leave the RvB war grounds when I am low on money, make some, then come back to try out a fit, and get killed, try another, get killed again, then maybe get a kill myself (I am still VERY new). The confidence has helped my lowsec exploration skills – my success in denying roaming pirates a kill has grown significantly since I joined.

So overall, I really like Eve! And well, it’s a problem because personal projects have been put aside in favor of game time! Besides there is still much more

You will find they have an aversion to reading long posts. Also some of the replies might make you rethink your opinion.

Something irked me while reading that post and then it hit me at the end, it is a recruiting tool for RvB. You didn't fool me! X

I kid. Welcome to EVE Online. It's a big game but that is the thing that makes it so good. There's so much to do and so much to see. Plus, it isn't baby's first MMO and actually takes some degree of skill not just what is the FOTM.

Welcome to eve !!!

o/

Please screenshot this thread with your OP

Rewatch and reread in 1 year if you manage to make it that far.

Compare with your own perception of the game then, turn to the dark side, scream NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

And then go sucide gank someone Big smile

Jokes aside, welcome to the game and forums, hope you have a thick skin, if you can swim through the hatred, ponies, resident forum trolls and whatnot you will see how wonderful the game truly is, no matter how many times you want quit you will regret it or if you actually do it, you will return, so never ever biomass your char.

Everyone returns even if for a short while.

Take care!

Welcome.

Sounds like you're off to a great start. Especially if, as it sounds like, you've decided at an early stage to get rid of the fear of losing ships — this will really help you in the long run. Big smile

The only real tip I have is: if someone says “wait until X before doing Y”, punch them somewhere where it really hurts. They've deserved it. Laughing as well is optional, but highly recommended. Blink

Good post. Well written, kept me interested.

You're gonna become a pirate eventually because that's freedom.

And so the DEV ALTS keep posting walls of text to promote the game.

Why don't you guys just take out adds like normal companies?

Welcome to Eve.

Get some friends to play and then gank them. Then take their stuff and know that there is nothing they can do. And if they don't laugh at the end they are not your friends.

Stuff Goes here
