How do I scoop to cargo

So, i've been hanging around the rookie areas of Minmatar high sec space when I noticed some random cargo container (or was it a jet can?) left unattended but not abandoned.


I right clicked but the option to scoop to cargo failed to show up. Now I was flying a Venture, the size of the container was only 27 m^3 and I had 50 m^3 of space in my normal cargo hold.

The only option is to loot but I read that scooping to cargo didn't count as a crime so even with the green security light on, Shouldn't I be able to scoop it even if it was marked yellow and not blue?

Granted it was just filled with ore I can mine easily, I wanted to practice on a tiny lump of ore before moving on to better targets.


In short, I have no idea what i'm doing wrong.

What color was the cargo container? If it's white, it belongs to you and you can freely scoop it. If it's blue, somebody has abandoned it and you can freely scoop it.

If it is yellow, however, it belongs to somebody else, and you will not be able to scoop it if your safety is set to green. If you switch your safety to yellow, you will then be able to scoop that cargo, but by doing so you will be flagged as a suspect - which means anyone can freely shoot at you in high or lowsec without any NPCs intervening on your behalf. The suspect flag lasts 15 minutes.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't scoop it anyway. Ninja looting other people's wrecks and containers is both fun and profitable - just make sure you are prepared either to fight or to run away.

Oh, that's how it works? ok then.

Now I get it.

So its switch to yellow>scoop to cargo>GTFO>profit

Not switch to yellow>loot container>GTFO>profit?

"Scoop to cargo" is an option that appears for drones or other objects in space, and it refers to trying to fit the whole thing into your cargo hold.

In the case of wrecks or containers, you don't need to try to fit the whole thing in your cargo hold, you can simply click to open it, and drag the contents (loot all), or drag whatever the valuables are, to your cargo hold.

The looting rules apply, though; if the cargo is someone else's, you will get a suspect flag, making you a valid target to attack (free for all) FOR 15 MINUTES.

So make sure that the "gtfo" part of your plan includes survival tips for the 15 minutes that you're vulnerable, including:

- what to do if the owner of the cargo can is actually cloaked nearby and uncloaks and pins you in place
- how to safely approach a station that may have plenty of pilots flying around it ready to shoot you as you try to dock
- dealing with a good prober, who can ferret out the safespot you're waiting at in 30 seconds or less.

In a lot of cases the owners don't bother hunting you, but when they do, hopefully the losses are acceptable to you. Because, just like with everything else in EVE, you are risking your ship for whatever worthless junk may be in that container.

EDIT: There is no container that is 27 m3. Containers you can buy are: 100 m3, 390 m3, 1500 m3, 3000 m3. Jet cans are 27 k m3 = 27,000 m3. Thus, no containers would fit into your Venture's 50 m3 cargo hold. That's why "scoop" wasn't visible. You can open the container and loot items from it, though, and if it's ore you can drag it from the container straight to your Venture's 5,000 m3 ore hold.
