Graphical overhaul of the Eve engine (question to dev too).

I have read numerous threads about how people would like certain graphical additions to the Eve engine so wanted to ask a few questions to developers and clear up a few uncertainties.

Here is a recent thread,

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=21023&p=2

So the first part are some questions for the developers.

1. Am I correct in assuming that graphical performance on the client does not affect the server side operation? A graphical effect is just a visual representation of a function, why would the server need to do anything other then know the code behind the function?

2. Now that modern graphics cards are optimized for DX10/11 and newer graphical APIs will you be migrating to an engine that supports more advanced graphical features?

So my next question for everyone else is what spec computers do you have?

I have a Q6600 (no overclock) 4GB RAM and a GTX 460 Nvidia GPU (DX11 compatible).

**Disclaimer**
I understand that there are many other things in Eve which need looking at but the team behind these aspects should be pretty will dedicated to very low level engine functions. The other parts which need looking at seem pretty much intrenched in the number/balance game.

1. yes, graphics are limited by your local machine.
2. They (CCP) are working on it

3. PC is crap, need eve on "low" across the board ... mainly because the PC isn't a gaming rig, but was re-purposed after Incursion because of SSE requirements, and not having the RL isk needed to get a "proper" gaming rig (**** you, student loans).

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I would not expect them to migrate to DX11 ever. If EVE would get another new rendering engine there would be a DX13 or maybe even DX15 available by that time.

It seems that many people fail to realize that switching over to newer API does not automatically make graphics any better like buying yourself a racing car does not turn you into professional racer. Newer API give you more possibilities but there is simply HUGE room for improvements for EVE within DX9. Also there are a lot of people who still use Windows XP and their systems don't support DX10/11.

So there is no sense in switching to DX10/11 neither from technical nor commercial point of view.

The migration would increase efficiency of the existing engine and future proof it. The change from DX9 to DX10 was massive,.

The simple fact is that current systems which can run DX10/11 will have superior graphics at a lower resource cost.

The newer APIs are much easier to work with too, for CCP to optimize the current DX9 engine would be a lot harder.

DX12 hasn't even been announced yet! DX13 would not be expected until 2015 at the earliest and there are no major changes in GPU design coming up other then smaller die and more stream processors so it would make sense to go at a redesign soon.
