EVE Online accounts and Steam

Hi,
New user here. Have had good success suing the launcher on Ubuntu 16.04 x86_64.
Initially I was a little confused by the launcher's messages about the Steam App ID, but eventually I figured out where to put the steam_appid.txt file (here: ~/.eve/wineenv/drive_c/sisi) and the messages went away.

By that time, I had already registered what I imagined to be my primary EVE Online account, using my preferred nick.

Now i notice that Steam itself recognises that EVE Online is in my library (i.e. it says "In Library" on the EO store page), though it doesn't show up in the library browser, which isn't really a surprise.
More interestingly, the EVE launcher now offers me a choice of two accounts to use; the initial account that I registered manually, and a new one based on my Steam ID.

The Steam store page for EO says:;
Quote:
Notice: Accounts created via Steam have to be accessed separately through the Steam client. Subscriptions & PLEX through the Steam store can only be redeemed by users that have created the EVE Online accounts via Steam on or after June 4th, 2013.

I'm a bit confused by this. Assuming that I might wish to subscribe or purchase PLEX via Steam, which account should I use to play? Can I somehow merge the accounts? Any advice welcomed.
