Hi there!
I can't figure out, why I see several ships on my DS scan, when nobody in local chat, except me?
Screenshots (I highlighted everything with red lines):
First and Second
I click to update DS every few seconds, so the data isn't outdated.
P.S. At first I freaked out and GTFO immediately.Shocked But now I confused. What?

They are unpiloted ships, most likely in a POS (player owned structure) shield.

Ships in space don't have to have pilots in them. These could be either abandoned in space (unlikely) or kept inside of a Starbase Shield (more likely).

Everyone who is logged in has to show in the local chat channel, with the exception of inside a wormhole system, in which case they only show when speaking.

As your by-yourself in null sec these are nothing to worry about.

POS - player-owned structures - are different than citadels and other stations; the POS has a "tower" that is anchored and provides a shield (a large bubble around the tower), and then various modules (labs, storage silos, manufacturing, ship hangars) are also anchored inside the shield near the tower.

Some people choose to use the SMA (ship maintenance array) to store their spare ships, but anything that's anchored around the POS tower uses powergrid and CPU, and the SMA power and CPU requirements pose a problem if they're trying to cram as many research labs as possible into the power grid / CPU provided by that tower. So in a lot of cases they'll just leave the spare ships floating unattended near the tower; as long as the ship is inside the shield, only corp-mates can get to it.

And also, any ships or containers left in space near a POS tower do not expire / do not disappear from space.

As warning, don't just warp to the tower unless you're cloaked; most null-sec towers have warp disruptors and guns anchored around them, so if your ship is visible it will get locked and shot.

Could be a few things. Either there is an unoccupied ship somewhere floating in space, like within a POS. Or you could be picking up an NPc mining op in a belt, on occasion the NPCs will roll a few retrievers and other mining ships out and mine in the belts. Those ships will show up on scan. But in your case it look like just unoccupied ships in a POS. Nothing to worry about just make sure to keep an eye on your local. :)

You could also get some DS practice and try to scan them down to a specific point in space, however i would warp to them if they're at moon, POS gun may shot you if you are in low/null sec.

hope that helps, good luck and fly safe o7

They've purchased CCP's newest service, the don't-show-in-local stealth option. Only 4.99 or 200 plex per month!

As if CCP would let that be "per month" instead of a one-use, one-hour item that gets consumed when used. Like a booster.

Can you not give them ideas, please?

Yes, if you eject from a ship in space it will sit there unmanned. More often players will do this inside the inpenetrable boundary of a Player Owned Starbase POS forcefield.

Unmanned ships show up on D-scan and can be located with combat probes. They can be boarded and also destroyed.

If you take a set of combat scanner probes and a mobile depot with you, you *might* be able to steal one or mess with the fittings. If it's not in a (powered!) pos.

That's at least a month away.

I once found a couple of fully-fitted Thrashers sat out in deadspace in a system where I was the only guy in local. I bookmarked their location, stored my ship at a nearby station, and then returned for them in my pod.

Depending on where you are, it can be worth probing-down unmanned ships, as they won't always be behind POS shields.

You should scan them down, every once in a while you find a nice ship to GTA.

Even if they are behind a POS shield, if you warp there in a pod the POS guns won't fire on you, and you can make an attempt to guess the password. Sometimes people are stupid and leave a shuttle named the password in the shield, or leave the password as 420. I can't speak as to the ISK/hour of such endeavours, but if you succeed you could make off with quite the prize.

another probability: he just logged off in space with a timer still on.

Thanks for the answers Smile
But why would they leave ships in POS? Wouldn't it be safer to dock them?

1. If it's a super, those can't dock (although if you have a super you should be logging it out so it disappears from space)
2. It may be to confuse invaders, since they'll see 'ghost' ships on dscan.

I have seen videos of people finding ships around POSs that ran out of fuel and the Shields powered down. They stole orcas and what ever they could lay their hand on.

I seen one that found a carrier in space around a POS and used it to bash everything and scoop the loot.

No cuts, no butts, no coconuts!
