Hey all, I just got one of may alts who started out as a salvager and is now into scanning down sites. Well, my question is I have come across all unstable wormholes aand have found nothng else. I have been scanning in low sec so i don't know if its me or the system. I want to find radar sights but to no avail. Anywho, what skills do I need to get to 4 or 5 and what probes etc should I use? Please let me know. Thanks...

Have you checked your filters?? Those sites are not checked off by default.

Yes I have. Here is my other qestion. Is it normal to not know what the signature you are scanning until you get a 100% hit? And what is best way to make isk scanning etc? Thanks...
P.S. I have all of the signatures checked but havent seen 1 radar site. Thanks...

Maybe just luck of the draw.Ugh

Radar, Grav, Mag, and Ladar will identify at 25%

To make a long story short, many MANY things in exploration are random. Dry spells are common, and often you won't find anything good for days. This is working as intended.

One of the most important skills to train is astronometrics 5. This will allow you to use deep space probes and start 'filtering' your sites. It is not a perfect method of finding what you are looking for, but it's much more effective than blindly scanning down every sig that shows up on the scanner.

More information can be found here in St Mio's Exploration Guide of Win.

Exploration can pay out very well if done properly, but you are always at the mercy of the rng (random number generator).

Hope this helps some. Fly safe. o7

Edit: Also, you will need an expanded probe launcher to use dsp's. To fit one requires a ship with reduction in required cpu, meaning you'll probably need 2 ships or a t3 cruiser with appropriate subsystem.

Basically the low sec sites have a lot more risk compared to high sec sites yet the rewards are about the same. Since you're new, you should concentrate in high sec systems that have low population count. Check Star Map stats.

Exploration Skills
Archaeology,
Astrometrics,
Astrometric Rangefinding,
Astrometric Pinpointing,
Astrometric Acquisition,
Survey,
Salvaging,
Hacking

Easy to get these skills to level 4 which should be good enough. If you're really serious, train them to lv 5. Use top equipment, Sisters.

For more info, best thing to do is read up on some exploration / probing threads in 'Missions and Complexes' channel. Or use http://eve-search.com/

Why Sisters? I read the attributes and their scan strength is lower then the core probe scanners. Wouldn't it be better to use stronger scan strength probes?

Because there are two kinds of probes combat- (blue one) and core probes (yellow).
Core scanner cannot find ships or structures but has 2x probe strength compared to combat scanner probe and sisters not only have a slightly higher probe strength they also have a better "minimum range" when trying to nail that elusive 99% scan hit.
Getting scan deviation skill to IV helps with probing a lot also get a covert ops frigate (probing bonuses).

Core and Combat probes have exact same probe strength. Note that whenever you half the scan range when scanning, probe strength will double. That is why core probes seems to have double strength, but since their minimum range is half of combat probes minimum range, they actually have exact same probe strength when using same range.

So in short: when using same range (e.g. 4 AU), both Core and Combat probes have exact same probe strength.

With high skills I actually preferred combat probes for scanning sites because I did not need the 0.25 AU range and I preferred to have longer max range instead (64 AU).

As for Sisters probes: They just have a bit better probe strength. So if you can afford to use them, they will give small bonus.

umm no they have complitely different stats:

combat scanner probe:

base scan range 0,5 AU
base sensor strength 20
base maximum scan deviation 0.25 AU

core scanner probe:

base scan range 0,25 AU
base sensor strength 40
base maximum scan deviation 0.125 AU

As you can see from the stats core probes are 2x the better at finding sites then combat scanner probes that it doesn't really matter in the game is a completely different issue.
If you ask me combat probes shouldn't be able to find sites at all just like core probes cannot find finds ships and structures.

combat scanner probe:

sensor strength at 0.25 AU range: not possible
sensor strength at 0.5 AU range: 20 (i.e. "base sensor strength")
sensor strength at 1.0 AU range: 10
sensor strength at 2.0 AU range: 5

core scanner probe:

sensor strength at 0.25 AU range: 40 (i.e. "base sensor strength")
sensor strength at 0.5 AU range: 20
sensor strength at 1.0 AU range: 10
sensor strength at 2.0 AU range: 5

so they only differ at 0.25 AU range, and are exactly same at all other ranges (except 64 AU which core probe can't use)

so to find everything i take it you should use combat scanner probes?

Use core for sites and plexes. Use combat for mish/ships.

If you're looking for radar sites, use core probes every time. Being able to get them down to 0.25 au can make all the difference with a low strength signal. You /will/ run into signatures you have trouble getting at above 95%. To the point of having 6 probes at 0.25 au, and just fiddling with them round the point to get a good lock.

Yes, if you have high enough skills that you don't need that 0.25 AU range.

I have not been probing recently, and when I did I only wanted to find wormholes. Back then I didn't need 0.25 AU range so I used combat probes, but that might be different nowadays or for some other sites.

EDIT:

Also note that combat scanner probes are larger than normal probes and will only fit into expanded probe launcher, which is harder to fit into ship that normal probe launcher. So if that is problem just stick to core probes and normal launcher.

Good luck nailing down radar sites and many plexes with combat probes.....

7 probes and med skills in a rigged helios with sisters comabt gets me about 90% of the radars i encounter. Without those i would suggest using core. But yeah, there will be sites that you NEED the cores.

Some plexes like 10/10 are extremely difficult to get to 100% even with core probes and I'm inclined to say impossible with combat scanners but otherwise it doesn't really matter in the end which type of probes you use for finding sites.
