New player can't create character - crash

So, I'm trying to introduce a friend to EVE. He created an account and logged in, got to character creation... and when he gets there, "The Socket was Closed" and then the game force-closes.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what's going on. Other games work fine, he can play overwatch and any other game on his system without problem. I want to play with him, obviously. Can anyone think of a workaround or a solution? I don't want him to get disillusioned on the game.

The only thing I can suggest in a case like this would be to try using a VPN service to see if he can bypasses the issue in his current connection route.

But please note that using VPN is not supported, you use VPN service at your own risk.
