I've been building my exploration skills in Hi-sec and I'm thinking of trying some low-sec/WH sites.
I was hoping you all could answer some questions for me.... I've seen and read quite a few things about hunters staking out data and relic sites, waiting for explorers.

I understand there is an animation that shows when you start a hack, is there any way to use this as a way to flush out a hunter on your terms, rather than his/hers?

If you open the hack and then close it again, do you automatically fail the hack?

Would it be better to launch your drones before you start the hack everytime, just to cover you while your attention is elsewhere?
Any other tactics you can use to foil or delay hunters.

As an aside, is it better to use all five of your small tech two drones, or use as many med drones as bandwidth will allow.

If you close the hacking window, you automatically fail.
Two light drones do more dps than a single medium, and lights also apply dps better.
Launching drones when entering a site is a good idea, especially the ecm drones. As an explorer, you would not match those hunters in combat.
Generally there wont be too many hunters camping in low-sec and wh. Your main threat there would be roaming hunters. So watch d-scan, and try to keep at least 2 km from anything, so that you can immediately cloak when somebody appears on overview (you can also set your overview to make them more easy to notice, like add a flashing background). The cloaky camping hunters are usually seen in null-sec. For those gus, you can try fit an oversized AB and a scram on your ship, so that you have better chance to get rid of them.

Either that or use an Anathema with 4 Warp Stabs and thumb your nose at a large proportion of them.

If you want to keep costs down and you're sticking to lowsec, just use a Magnate and carry ECM drones. You can fit it for a few million and by the time you've run your first site you'll likely have paid for it. Keep a few in stock in case you get nabbed.

I use a Magnate to run WH data and relic sites from hisec on an alt and make bank. Sure I lose a few every now and again when I encounter someone who has a 3pt scram plus one other but these are few and far between.

Remember, anyone camping an exploration site is likely to be wary too as they can easily become a target themselves. I know, I've killed quite a few :)
