I started playing EVE back in 2003. I remember really cool things that are long gone in the game like colliding missiles, mines, jump in points (the age of real piracy), the Thorax floating 10 ogre II's and being the most feared ship in the game next to the scorpion, ECM scorpions able to lock down several ships at once, Kestrel fleets armed with cruise missiles....ahh the list goes on.

I reactivated my account again today and I see the game is still up and running after all these years. I love this game. I remember back in 2003 someone saying that this game was not going to last another 6 month due to lack of content. World of Warcraft was going to ruin this game. Yet here we are in 2017 and the average number of players is still about the same as it was back then if not more.

I have made a lot of friends and enemies in this game. I even got hired for a really awesome IT job straight out of this game. I own my own business now but my boss back then (who was also me CEO in EVE) is one of my biggest clients. I guess you could say I should thank CCP and the EVE community for that. So I will.

Thank everyone. I hope we are all still here 10 years from now talking about this great game.

I still have two mine BPOs. A Python and the other one who's name escapes me at the moment. I'd love to have them back in the game sometime.

Anaconda. Not my times, I'm too young, but once I bought a few thousands both of them. They safely have been waiting for better times. Whatever it means.

I am also surprised that this game is still so active. The game seems even better than before.

...because we all loved getting concorded hours, days, or even weeks after dropping the damn things just because some fuckwit tried to scoop them, yes? Roll

/me is bitter & twisted over the loss of a bloody expensive (back then) Scorpion to concorde gits for this reason - 6 ******* weeks after I laid the mine! Only reason I found out is I petitioned the loss as it made no sense.

I have been playing off and on since 2003... I played 6 months last year and left in January. Came back a few days ago.

Yes but nothing beat laying 30-40 mines at a jump gate in 0.0 and watching the traffic blow up.

Yeah man, there is no game like eve!

I'm confident I will never get bored with this game. I want to try out every ship, fly in small gangs of different compositions, be able to build everything there is in this game, meet new people, make new enemies and even when I've done all that, there's so much corp/alliance/coalition strategy to work on.

Eve just has endless depth as long as you have imagination!

Oddly enough the game has been good to me too. Not as directly as yours, but in more subtle ways.
The best part about it is that it does let you take a break from time to time to get things done. Because sometimes you have to.

By the way, has anyone been playing continuously since 2003, or even somewhere around that time? If yes, they must have accumulated a pretty amazing amount of wealth, skill points, ships, BPOs and assets in general all over the universe?

Skill points don't represent the time spent in game or in active subscription anymore. The one who has just started can have more skill points (skill injectors) than the veteran with 10+ years of game play if that's what makes his boat flow. Wealth, BPO and other stuff are irrelevant at all as there are veterans who don't bother with accumulating any sort of wealth - they simply don't care about the amount of ISK on their wallet and there are people who never did and never will use BPOs or get involved in industry.

And this is the best thing about this game, because your goals are your goals and your achievements in game may be totally different from those that other player is seeking. And still you'll both have your own fun in it.

Yeah ok, I know about skill injectors and that not everyone wants to accumulate wealth. However, on average, one could assume that if someone was subscribed for 10+ years that they would have a lot of SP. And many of those characters, also a lot of wealth and assets. Not everyone, but many, I would claim.

We are only 2 months and 6 days from the next annual "EVE IS DYING! day".

It was "WoW is going to ruin this game", but there is now a long list behind it:

Black Prophecy

Jump Gate

SWG

SWTOR

Star Trek Online

Elite : Dangerous

No Man's Sky

Star Citizen

And those are just the ones of the top of my head lol. If EVE were old enough you'd probably have seen someone say "PONG is definitely going to kill EVE" lol.

Eve is probably not going to die anytime soon, but I can't see it expanding it's playerbase significantly either. It's very much an old farts' elitist game, and I don't mean that in a bad way. There are pros and cons to this. It's nice for us old folks to have our own sandbox, where we can throw our toys out of the pram every now and then when things get tough.

The trolls we have in eve are usually not of the "10-year kid messing for lulz" -variety, but of the 35+ year old grown ups legally acting like jackasses in a virtual world, since they wouldn't be able to get away with it in real life. Lol

I concur for the most part. I was thinking about this just last night, that Eve is very much an Elitist game. It is also a "nerds" game. Now I don't mean todays nerds, but the Nerds of the 70's and 80's. We didn't grow up with computers and MMORPG's, we invented them. In Eve, many see a game that has not fallen victim, at least yet, to the instant gratification, it's all about me, everyone thinks the way I do, cater to me or Eve will die, crowd. And we would like to keep it that way. It's a throwback to the days where games weren't released until they were actually complete, and were generally meant to provide unlimited re-playability, as well as a depth and scope not seen in todays offerings. You actually had to work and learn things to be successful. Back in those days, the pre-purchase measure of the quality of a game was the weight of the box it came in. If the manual wasn't over 150 pages, it was a kids game with limited appeal and life expectancy. I don't think the problem goes as high as the 35+ group. Maybe 25 to 30. It's the "everybody gets a trophy" generation. We really failed our kids with that scheme. That isn't to suggest that they are all like that. There are a bunch of kids in their late teens in my alliance and they've been a lot of fun to hang and play with. They are smart, respectful and have made the effort to learn and understand the design concepts and philosophy of Eve, as envisioned and developed by CCP over the last 14 years.

As I've said before, more than anything else, this game is about attitude and effort. Some people just get it, and then some people just don't. For all the folks claiming that Eve will die if CCP doesn't change the game to cater to the "new generation" of gamers, I offer that I have been playing this game for just less than three months. Started as a Hi-sec only, scared bear Alpha, Omega'd up a month later and moved to Low-sec. Now I live in NS over in Provi and couldn't be happier. The fact that CCP hasn't gone all WoW, Angry Birds with Eve is the reason that I decided to stay.

So the things that CCP have done to attract new players has worked. I'm proof. And I'm not the only one. We came and we stayed. CCP isn't trying to bring in all gamers, they're trying to bring in the right gamers.

Respectfully Submitted.

Yes but that was the problem with the damn things - they gave you aggro/sec hits dependent on where YOU were, not the mines.

So you lay a load of mines in prep for something in Stain (this is what happened) and the enemy fleet gets melted before they get there. Nobody goes near the mines for weeks (no anchors needed then, everything bar jetcans/loot stayed in space forever) and you're pootling through highsec when concorde descends on you.

There were multiple issues with them - not least dumping a load outside a station undock in highsec & redocking. Wait out the timers, rinse & repeat.

I doubt we'll be seeing them again anytime soon.

Oh & I remember cruise kessies (Kestrels) - epic overpowered fun. For "younger" players this was back when there was no explosion radius etc for missiles. They hit for full damage regardless of ship size/velocity.
