if you haven't heard about SOPA or don't know what it is, exactly, you need to become educated on the subject. this bill is ludicrous and will destroy the internet as we know it. even if you don't think it will affect you, i beg you, go to this link and use the "take action now" function. https://action.eff.org/o/9042/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=8173

"As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs. In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.

It gets worse: Under SOPA's provisions, service providers (including hosting services) would be under new pressure to monitor and police their users’ activities. While PROTECT-IP targeted sites “dedicated to infringing activities,” SOPA targets websites that simply don’t do enough to track and police infringement (and it is not at all clear what would be enough). And it creates new powers to shut down folks who provide tools to help users get access to the Internet the rest of the world sees (not just the “U.S. authorized version”). "

this article provides a more lamen friendly explanation of what SOPA is and how it will affect you http://www.tomshardware.com/news/toms-hardware-sopa-Stop-Online-Piracy-Act-PROTECT-IP-Senate,14393.html

Sopa!

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

In before SOPA goes to OOPE.

And yes, it's treasonous legislation, but then 93 senators also voted to make indefinite detention without charges and a trial codified into law. That too is treason.

Remember all those holocaust films you watched and may have thought "if only they (insert what they should have done here) ?"

Well, it's time to start thinking of doing those things you think the victims of tyranny in the last century should have done before it was too late for them.

Not EVE related. And politics is a nono on this forum.

I think most here have heard of the BS known as SOPA from other forums anyway.

ok well i want to stay on topic here.

I think this will directly affect EVE both in game and out. Imagine every in game video set to music being cause to shut down the entire website it's hosted on AND linked from. This will eventually lead to all internet forums being set to approved posts only. Would you still use the EVE forum if you had to wait for staff approval for every single post you wanted to make? Would CCP even continue to maintain a forum at all if they had to hire exponentially more staff in order to manage said approval system?

On the upside, when all those zombied up people out there can't get their WOW, SWTOR, or Second Life, perhaps then they will have the kind of insight that Russians had in 1992 but should have had in 1917, or the kind of insight that Germans had in 1945 that they should have had in 1933.

There's a point where the real damage ends and people carry this WELL into hype and tinfoil hat territory. I encourage all to actually READ THE THING but sadly yes... there is no way to argue that this is a very bad thing.

Sadly this is not the case. The bill opens up the way (or rather, widens it, given earlier legislations) for complete censorship. Having the power to take down "infringing sites" with just a quick phonecall from a MAFIAA upper management bozo. How some people can't see the potential for abuse here is beyond me, as organizations like the MIAA and RIAA have proven time and time again that they will use every single loophole they can find, or even bend or break the law if they think "it's justified".

The bill itself is not bad perse, but it's worded in such a way that makes a lot of bad things possible. Given power, very few people know how to use it responsibly, if they even intend to do it at all.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

A common signs warning passersbye that they are entering the territory of the tinfoil hat people.

Everything in SOPA begins very specifically with written documentation from very specifically the copyright holder. Someone must type it, someone must send it, someone must receive it, and someone must read it. The more you think they'll try to censor, the farther from reality you get because neither the companies nor our government have the man hours to devote to reach the quotas set by the expectations of the internet panic surrounding this bill.

Further, anything that DOES get taken down is documented in at least three places. The company, the government, the ISP, and potentially an advertiser and a site owner/operator. Any abuse would be obvious to all parties if someone decided to question it.

I say this not to defend SOPA, but because in order to stop the trend you have to be informed. The REAL discussion that affects law, is not 'if' or 'OMG CENSORSHIP'... it's a discussion taking place around 'how' to defend and enforce a copyright in today's world. Clearly we're not going in the right direction, but the drama doesn't help and the misinformation is very harmful.
