When will rat switch aggro from one player to another?

I am going to do a burner mission with a friend. We researched the rat's stats and decided that my friend will fit an assault frigate that can tank the burner rat.

The question is, will the rat switch aggro to me? Or focus on my friend as long as I have lower DPS and speed, and is not a logi?

It is my understanding that NPC's focus their DPS on targets with the most threat.

However I don't run Burner missions so I could be wrong.

I'm not sure about burner's specifically but years ago when the sleeper AI first came out, myself and some corp mates did a lot of experimentation. They would often do things like switch to whoever just showed up on grid and other things that you would not think they would do. However they seemed to not like Ewar and remote repair.

All other things equal if you were repping a fleet mate, the ship sending the reps seemed to be more likely to have aggro. Within Ewar I seem to recall some being more effective at grabbing aggro but I don't recall which.

I put no faith in the threat system in eve, fit every ship as if you are going to get shot. Other games whoever is at the top of the threat table gets aggro all the time and typically uses abilities, skills, and equipment that increase threat. In Eve npcs don't like remote reps, high damage, or ewar for example. I think the npcs will shoot the highest threat most of the time, but npcs seem to target switch after a certain period which imo makes way more sense than attack highest only. If you can't break the tank why keep attacking it?

Mission NPCs will switch targets. They seem to like to shoot the squishy targets. One of my corp mates saved his ship vs a burner by bringing in an alt in a griffin. The burner burned the griffin and he got his mission ship out.

I agree and I didn't mean the ship with the most DPS is the ship with the most threat.

Anything from a Logistics Frigate to a Command ship providing on-grid Fleet bonus could and probably is considered to be the ship with the most threat.

Back in the old days, the first one on grid would get targeted and be "The tank".... Now they switch so I wouldn't risk anything that can't handle it.

I remember my days being the tank for mining ops in 0.0. A little boring but still good times.

I've always wondered how exactly it works, not sure but standings with the rats must play some part because you can have a large group of people in a place and the rats always attack me even when I'm the lowest threat in terms of ships.

My friend and I tried and eventually beat a few of the burner missions. I am sharing our experiences, which might not be 100% accurate, so take it with a grain of salt.

1) The person with the highest DPS appears to be aggro-ed.

However, there is slightly different behavior when drones and logi is involved, depending on the mission. E.g. Burner Daredevil stayed on my friend the whole time and ignore my drones. On the other hand, Anomic Team switched from my friend to my drones instantly. My friend was the highest DPS and most expensive/powerful ship in both cases.

2) Logi always get primaried.

As before, my friend is always the highest DPS in the most powerful ship. Every time I join the fight with logistic modules, the pocket aggro instantly switches to me.

In general, NPC really hate EWAR, but even so they can still switch targets.

ECM seems to be near the top of their hate list.

Target painting can cause NPC to target a ship more often than others.

Energy neutralizers & NOS seem to be pretty low on the hate list, possibly because they are both energy limited.
