I'm going to be completely honest here, what's fun about Eve?

What is the fun in life? I mean... you can do everything you imagine and yet it feels meaningless. The universe does not care if we exist or not and there is no god. Someone hug me.

Here, at the outset, is your problem.

You have, I strongly suspect, been brought up on the myriad of things marketed as 'games', but are truly 'entertainments'.

"(Y)ou can sit back, relax, and enjoy" a: film; a hobby; a pastime; a book; or even those risible and mostly moronic FPS' that pander to those who just like to shoot ****.

They are NOT 'games' - EVE is.

You were probably right - EVE may well not be the game for you - unless you actually want to try and play it.

For the last 20 years - if a game I'm playing hasn't meant I use Excel, then it's not really for me......

And yes - EVE is niche.

Be not afeared - it is indeed us who are not 'average'; not near the 'norm' - there's nothing wrong with you - it's us. And we know it!

But.... I sit back, relax and enjoy EVE Online... i do occasionally fall asleep on the keyboard. Not sure how people play this game but everything in EVE Online is so slow I can watch the entire extended edition of Lord Of The Rings in between most actions.

Eve is so open and layered, it's almost a lifestyle. Speaking for myself, once I recognized that facet, I began to sit back and enjoy Eve much more.

Your Eve character is an alternate persona in an alternate but fascinating reality. Consider coming to Eve to get away from that "other" world - it's good for that. It's a sure thing that you'll never master the New Eden world, but it's also a sure thing that you'll discover new exciting things regularly.

One day, when I was up till 2am working on spreadsheets that I was crafting to plot out the next six to eight Eve months, I suddenly realized what I had going here. Seems like a modest and obvious realization, but even that took years, and my belief is that it will be the first such revelation of many.

There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance.

If it doesn't come naturally, then the conclusions that "EVE might not be for be" might just be the right one.

I pvp to help out my corp/alliance/coalition, or when someone comes into whatever space I'm in, but I'm not a pvp freak, I don't roam, I don't do solo etc. I enjoy shooting rats and developing new fits to shoot rats with. I constantly experiment with how I can push a ratting/mission ship further, and I help others learn to make isk with sub capital ships (I hate capital PVE so even though it could make more isk, I don't do it).

The pvp and dealing with people are just 'spice of life' additions that help, but it's the pve that keeps me. And it comes naturally to me, I didn't have to force it. And like I said, if enjoyment of a thing doesn't come naturally to you, then yea maybe it's not for you.

I suppose for a game that is niche it is clearly only meant for a certain type of player. It does however have the absolutely worse pve I have ever seen in a game. I know that it wasn't meant to be a pve game, but the content here is in some places so atrociously bad that is literally painful to play it. It just isn't entertaining in the log run, nor fun to do over and over again. You go to a station and click on a box and up pops some out of date dialog window telling you how important something is. It doesn't matter though, and the mission isn't important as it is simply the equivalent of a daily mission you can do over and over for a reward. You get sent out into a space to enter a room filled with targets that you shoot again and again. I don't know how to improve the way missions are but they are so uninteresting. Maybe pve isn't the primary focus of Eve but if anything hopefully the missions will be getting a rework in the future (esp mining and distribution?).

The game is mainly about two things: pvp and the economy. But largely it comes down to pvp. I don't find pvp in Eve fun frankly and I'm not entirely sure why. Fitting ships, different ships to chose from, and building up your skills to do something is all fun. Yet, when it comes down to it there seems to be something lacking in ship vs ship combat. It seems too bland, while also being at the very same time fairly complicated. You don't simply fly to a ship, orbit, and press f1. You have to know the ships you are up against, the fittings they might use, the holes they have in their resists, and how to counter each situation. You also need to know when you simply not bother and not engage. That doesn't include managing range and your velocity in relation to theirs to do as optimal dps as you possibly can in your limited engagement window. In the end it seems far too punishing. You can not only lose your ship, but your whole fit, and even your pod including implants you might have had as well. So in the end I think that this is the major deal breaker for quite a few. Eve isn't a game where you can just lose your avatar over and over again and keep coming back and still do damage without having lost anything.

In other games you can be practically naked and still contribute in a fight. You can walk up to a fully armored player in pvp and knock them out and steal all their stuff while naked. Eve however isn't like that. You have to have isk and you have to be able to afford to lose it when buying ships. Those ships have to be fitted, and I can't simply knock out a ship and steal its cargo and fitting then laugh at it in jest. Eve kicks you in the nuts and laughs at you for playing it instead. And that is probably the one thing that isn't marketed about it: Eve is the Demon's Souls of mmo space games. It isn't supposed to be fun necessarily but hard. The players make that even harder as they have been here far longer than anyone just joining. I mean basically by joining the game and undocking you are opening up a world of hurt! The game also relies heavily on the players to pull others in, and one of the very first things they can be greeted with is a mining corporation in high sec.

Which leads me to the last thing. Everyone in Eve is fighting for the part of Eve that makes it fun for them. And pretty much all of those things revolve around wrecking other peoples dreams and ambitions. Eve isn't fun! You guys all suck! I hate you all!

:(

Pve in other games is pretty much the same, go grind whatever mob till either you kill enough or they drop whatever items and come back. Something something storyline and you are the hero blah blah blah. Oooh time to grind some other whatever mobs!

Your end point on pvp is why many players fly cheap ships they can afford to replace over and over. It is also why having friends matters, some backup can create some very interesting outcomes. Same with taking the right fights. I've seen frigates kill battleships, I've also seen frigates hold down caps till other ships could come in and blow them up, or the cap self destructs. In a game like destiny or rift I can go die over and over again and it doesn't matter I still get loot. I don't have to get better, I barely even need to contribute, the games just throw me into matches I mash some buttons and get loot. sure it is fun for a while but not very interesting long term.

"practically naked and still contribute in a fight" I have to wonder what games you are talking about. In most games I've played nearly all your stats come from your equipment, being naked means you can't even hit the enemy, and their hits will pretty much one shot you. Sure some games have default stats but gear typically still gives huge advantages.

All PvE games eventually turn into a grind when all the shiny pixels and audio files have been absorbed through your eye hole. At the end of the day, a robust player based economy and player2player interactions lead to long term success and enjoyment. If you are into shiny things, then go play WoW as a panda or buy some games on Steam that have a conclusion. Eve is for the 100% social player and can never be won or conquered and is why it will always be the best MMO to exist. I wish one day that the size, scope and complexity of its economy can be utilized in a land based sandbox title, but I havent encountered one yet that delivered on its sales pitch. Maybe CCP should tackle it.

So you're telling me that I joined another mining corporation which is masquerading as a nullsec power.

I joined horde, got wrecked by some spensive orthurus. EVen after the orthurus was blown up by some people he came back half an hour later with another 500 mill orthurus. If I wanted to be killed by the rich I'd fly back out to that shadow cartel gatecamp in auga that killed me today.

Try joining something like the hogs collective, they are involved, informed and have tutorials out the wazoo for newbros, plus some usual website signup stuff. So long as they don't actually think you're a spy it should be great.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

Why are you all even bothering to respond to this guy? Look ^ there's something more going on here than he just doesn't like the game.

Why do we suck cause he doesn't like game? Why does he hate us all?

This is just one of those unfortunate miserable people who sees other people having the fun he wants to have but can't because he's just a miserable person for some reason. So he hates us.

After a huge post, that's all this is really about. That's all he really wanted to express. "You're having fun and I'm not. I hate you"

I feel sorry for him.

If I ever leave the game before CCP shuts it down, I'm not leaving a forum suicide note from this toon. I'll just unsub and that's it. Why he and other's have to leave a big forum suicide note is because they want attention.

Let this guy leave without giving him any more of the attention he craves.

Because that's one of the major fun things in EVE: Complexity is actually fun for some people who find other games simply dumbed down or just pure twitch. EVE is a game of insane complexity, long term thinking and patience.

Its very obviously a shared sandbox, some people will want to claim all the sand as theirs and some people will just want to pee on the sand you are using because you are using it, even if they didn't want to use it for anything else.

Also PVP generally, numbers matter. ie numbers of players, shared goals, the fleet strategy (often tied to training doctrine, which is also tied to production of doctrine ships being laid on), and the tactics of the moment. I think that to an extent you are taking a 1v1 mindset into a game where 1 of something is not a powerful thing and where force multipliers exist that don't work 1v1.

ie inevitably some of the PVP game is actually ensuring that the numbers game doesn't stack up in ways you don't want it to.

From a solo PVE perspective, mining is kinda different from distribution running is kinda different from hacking exploration is kinda different from combat exploration is kinda different from security mission running, is kinda different from anomoly ratting, is kind of different from officer hunting. Not only that, lots of people do the same things different ways, or just do a couple of things that they don't mind doing.

I have not played in 3 years, I was in 4S. I'm coming back because the 'Siren's Call' has gotten to the point I can't ignore it. The game will usually always bring you back when you see news of something going on. The Anime War is what caught my attention. I was sitting in my security car in an empty parking lot, on a stormy night. Being bored, I checked reddit on my phone and saw the PC Gamer article about it.

That alone, is what sparked the 'Siren's Call'. I don't even give a care about the whys of it. Every group looks for some dumb thing to spiral out of control if they feel their people are bored and log in's are on a down turn. Mittani does it all the time, the man is pretty good at it, imo. There have been many others as well.

If you want to pew pew, do it. If you want to pew pew the market, do it. This is really one of the only games where you can go from nothing, to something isk wise just sitting in a station and market warring. PVP is pretty great though, and gratifying. The adrenaline from it that I get is top notch. There isn't any other pvp type game that does it like Eve.

I'm excited to be back to check out everything that's changed. OP, you seem to have more than enough info to think on. Just have fun, and if you aren't, there is no shame in taking a break or re-evaluating what it is you want from the game.

Eve is for those who enjoy a game where you CAN'T sit back and relax, at least if you expect to survive or succeed. This has been well known in the general gaming world for 13 years. You either have just recently hooked up to electricity and the internet or you are faking naivety.

I refuse to accept that. If Eve is truly a sandbox I wish to create a cozy little neck of the woods where I can carelessly sit back and relax in a big blinged out ship while laughing at you all.

Quote:
And...... Another one bites the dust... yeah yeah.

Hint* your missing the point of the game. And even so every game have his charm why do you think people play league of legends and starting every time over and over again?

What is the point of Eve? If Eve is a sandbox then the point should be relatively whatever I want it to be, within reason of course.

The bolded underlined part is what I do daily in Jita. Drinking beer, taking potshots at the dumbasses.. I call it 4-4 seppuku as it is my honor to help them die in glorious ways for no real reason, laughing and BSing with people in various channels enjoying the wildlife. Just want to bet on the idiots who duel each other with the regulars seeing as CCP ruined my nado ganker bounty blapping paychecks.RollTwisted

So if your ever bored all the Eve world passes through Jita 4-4 eventually. Just wait 5 mins and another idiot will show up. It gets nice and lively on the weekends too. Bring a beer, a fishing rod with "stupid" lures and your best dressed ships to DIAF, cuz sooner or later you will. Dip your feet in the kiddie pool we filled with cold water in the summer heat, relax and enjoy. Redneck style!! Blink

Here! hold my beer!! Watch this!!Lol

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Being in a large group that pretty much consists of poo slinging monkeys who then get treated as such, as most groups are, is not for everyone.

Many people love to follow, to not have to think for themselves or to be given a set of straight forward goals, those people join massive alliances. Some people want to define their own goals or perhaps advance on their own merit.

Many people love to join a side that's already winning or in control (this goes back to the above), some people prefer to be the underdog.

If you don't enjoy the EVE you're playing right now, change your situation and goals.
