Seems like a very open game. Any places I should stick to when I start or steer clear of?

Grab a cheap ship and go out and explore. Don't be afraid to lose ships. The are disposable. Just learn from it everytime you explode. Convo your attackers and ask questions. Most are glad to help. New Eden is huge! Have fun finding your place in it.

Be wary of risk-adverse advice from people who have been in your starter NPC corp for many, many years.

if a deal sounds too good to be true it is probably a scam, anything saying hangar clear out 8bil and is at 800 mil for example is a pure scam with worthless items. Rare officer mod for 1bil on contracts and someone is buying for 3 bil, scam. by general rule if someone advertises it in local it's a scam.

courier contracts to citadels, again a scam, maybe not if it is a well known public citadel, but very possibly still.

don't carry all your eggs in one basket. people will sacrifice their ships for a chance at your loot if it is valuable enough.

when in doubt shoot stuff! even if you explode it should be fun.

I'd typically say don't go to rancer, but it kinda sounds fun, just don't expect to live, and if you do bonus!

Never take the contract with your hauler. Always use an unsuspicious alt. Make sure, there's a decent time offset when delivering, so your alt cannot be connected easily to your hauler.

Ift the distance isn't large, check if you can dock at a citadel with your hauler, before taking the contract with your alt.

Remove standings and insurance.

At first, stay clear of any system lower than 0.5.. lowsec areas. The game will also warn you of this.

As you get your bearings set, start exploring the more dangerous areas in a cheap ship so if ever you lose it, you can always replace it easily.

Ask alot of questions, as even vets of years and years still do.
