Just how complex is this game (for a new player)?

You'll need patience and a fascination with detail. In Eve there is always FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). You'll wonder where to find fleet fights and wormholes. You'll certainly think that there's more going on somewhere other than where you are, because most likely there is.

Start an Alpha. See what happens. If you're near Dodixie, send me an in-game message and we'll meet in some local high-sec system and I'll help you figure out some of the basics.

Actually, if you want to see some interesting sights, get into your starter Frigate, warp over to Dodixie and just sit near a station and watch some of the ships come and go.

Don't let the learning curve scare you. It is easy to 'ease into' this game, and you are welcome to learn things at your own pace.

A word of warning. Former WOW players have a bad reputation in some circles here as having a culture or mindset that goes against the culture/mindset of many Eve players. I'm not an expert on what the issues are but I think I've heard things like 'whiny,' 'carebear-ish,' 'risk-averse,' a tendency to deck out a ship with super-bling as a solution to being a bad pilot, etc.

That should not discourage you from playing by any means. It's just a head's up that you might want to find out what cultural/mindset issues there are.

Think long and hard if this is what you want to do. Once you become addicted there is no turning back, your life is screwed.

No really, if you don't have self control and your are easily bored, then try another game.

Objection: it's only as boring as you make it to be by setting your goals and chosing methods to reach it.

Of course, it's easy to set a goal or pick ways to achieve it that will result in a boring experience.

I also came from WoW and if it's the economy part that you're into eve is so much more difficult to turn real profit. I used to do 150k/day in sales in WoW and could supply my whole guild with whatever it needed. I'm eve I have trouble making enough for a plex through pure manufacturing. I'm still working on spreadsheets and all the things required to run a real efficient industry operation but it's nothing like WoW in that capacity.
