I'm a Gallenteen pilot so all my ships are armor reinforced. So I have been basically building up all my armor related skills and certificates. But what shield skills or certificates should I be mostly concerned with just so they don't chew through my shields very fast? Since I don't use any shield modules I'm not sure what would just beef up my shields as they are. Would it help if I raised my shield compensation skills? Here is my character: http://eveboard.com/pilot/Zornia_Estemaire/certificates Thanks for any suggestions!

if you fly Gallente all the time, don't bother with shield skills, focus on your armour skills

There is a saying among armor folks that the shield bar is the "Red Bar on top of your armor". Being a Primarily Gallente pilot, this will be true for you. Armor is your bread and butter. Shield Management, Shield Operation and the Compensation skills will help, but your shields will be usually ripped to shreds because Gall ships are designed primarily for Armor...most of them do not have good natural shield hp. If you really really want a ship that uses shields, just flat out fly Caldari and get your shield skills up. I say Caldari because your Hybrid skills will transfer to the many good Hybrid boats Caldari has.

Shield Management gives more shield HP.
Shield Operation gives better passive shield regeneration.

Those are the only two an armor tanker needs. The shield bar is there to let you know you're being targeted.

You only need the following skills when you cross-train to shield ships:
Shield Compensation only helps if you use Shield Booster modules. It reduces the amount of cap used by them.
EM/Explosive/Kinetic/Thermic Shield Compensation only helps with passive shield amplifiers, or with shield hardeners that are not active. You get slightly better shield resists.
Shield Upgrades only helps with Shield Extenders, Shield Rechargers and other such modules. Reduces power grid for them.
Tactical Shield Manipulation reduces the amount of damage that leaks through to armor when your shields are less than 25% but more than 0%. There is fierce debate whether having this at V helps or hinders.

As a Gallente pilot, I'd recommend the following:

Tactical Shield Manipulation IV, (Need it for t2 shield hardeners)
Shield Upgrades V (<- very useful for tight fits)
Shield Management V
Shield Operation V
Compensations to III or IV. (Not essential, but itsquick to train to lvl 3)

For PvE, the passive shield Myrm can tank as much as a drake... And if your plexing in a group, its common to put a token shield tank on your domi/mega so you can fill the lows with damage mods and tracking computers.

For PvP, both the Brutix and Ishtar are often shield tanked. These skills are also very useful in cross-training to other races..

Get the main skills I listed to level IV... The LvL 5's are good to have, and worth the time if your spec'd to train them, but not essential.

There's several Gallente ships that shield tank very well; Vexor, Celestis, Brutix (PVP only), myrmidon, Ishtar, Navy dominix, Hyperion (pvp only). Apart from that, getting 20% more (lvl 4) shield HP and recharge is always good, no matter how you look at it.

Not training shields means you're limiting yourself for no reason whatsoever.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

The above is all good advice. Your shield skills are fine for focusing on Gallente ships. Focus on finishing all your armor support skills to 4, get your gunnery support and drone support skills up to 4. I would also HIGHLY recommend getting your core fitting Elite certificate. Yes, it is a pain to get, but you aren't all that far off and it is a big help in getting into the tighter fits.

I'm a Caldari pilot. I have decent armor tanking skills, and elite shield tanking skills.

It doesn't hurt (much) training shield tanking skills to level 4 so you can pretty much forget them after that. Not a priority though.

Shield Management 5 and Shield Operation 5 are the only two I'd recommend to level 5 if you never ever plan to primary tank shield.

Thx for all the advise. Unfortunately, all I have been working on lately is my Core certificates and it has been driving me nuts. I have been ignoring my gunnery, drones, and spaceship command skills for the past 2 or 3 monthsCry Although, if I just drudge this out about 3 or 4 more weeks I should no longer have fitting, cpu, or powergrid problems.Smile Can't wait until this core training is finally over and I can start reaping the rewards!
