Thought some of you might like this.

TL:DR I found a 30DPS Alpha Clone running Wormhole sites solo, so they're not useless.

Awesome.
In fact alphas are perfectly capable of running sites and killing sleepers in Class 2 Wormholes. Of course given some traininng but its doable and not that hard actually.

I encourage all alphas to try wormhole space, it's awesome and very much different that normal space.

Fly safe out there :)

Oh yeah i totally agree. Since the advent of Alpha Clones i've made a special effort to get as many as i can to come check out WH space and several are now permanent residents. The main point here is that nobody put this one up to it. He had no network to point him in the right direction, just a "new player friendly" corp who all but told him he was an idiot for trying. I have no doubts he would have similar luck in many C2 sites also.

Now i plan to link this thread as a quick answer for "Alpha Clone = Useless threads" Pirate

That guy is a little bit insane, at the same time I do C2 sites in an alpha gnosis with a tank that breaks in about 30 seconds if I let a sleeper battleship apply to it.

Nice story and good for you for helping a newbro learn to enjoy wormhole space! (<3 wormholes)

I still contend alpha clones are not meant to be a long term solution. Many of us enjoyed the novelty of doing things sub-optimally (like sleeper sites in a 31 dps Tristan) when we were newbros. It's new and exciting and you achieved it on your own so it's very rewarding. But it's unsustainable. You'll quickly feel the limitations that alpha state enforces, by design, because of course CCP wants you to sub.

So I never encourage new players to plan on playing as an alpha indefinitely. It's just not realistic and pretending it is makes them feel deceived. Playing as an alpha until you've explored the boundaries of the trial and enjoyed it enough to want to sub? Sure! That's what it's there for. I love new players and I have no problem with them taking advantage of an extended trial. But marketing EVE as "free to play" implies you can get all the content without subbing, when really you're just scratching the surface.

I don't like to mislead people. EVE, in my opinion, is not free to play. It is free to try.

Fair points, though this thread isn't really about the long term prospects of Alphas vs Omegas. It's a counter (one of many) to the argument that i see daily regarding whether or not it's possible to have fun, make isk and have a legitimate effect on your surroundings as an Alpha clone. The forums give a warped view of reality, Alpha's are actually doing really well from what i've seen in space.

Cara have you considered that if one day a higher level of subscription was added which gave access to a whole new level of skills that even $15 a month Omegas don't get, eventually Omega would be considered sub optimal and impossible to have fun with even though it would be the same as we have now. It's important to try to seperate in your head the difference between how much fun can be had by an Alpha, and how much fun can be had by an Alpha who wants to be Omega.

Some people don't care if they get to be Omega, they see a game that's fun and are smashing it.

Absolutely lovely story! Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely use it whenever someone complains about alphas :)

EVE is what you made it for you. That is not a matter of alpha or omega.

I have to object. As an F2P bum, I came to play as an Alpha indefinately - or at least until I could reliably maintain Omega from ISK. Wasn't sure if it will be possible, and certainly didn't expect it to be this quick.

Got to plexing my first acc after two months, now I'm plexing two and considering if I should maintain a thrid one. And I spend much more time having pointless, rarely profitable fun than focused grinding.

So yeah, EvE is F2P.
