Social Skill and Standing Gain/Loss

I'm trying to navigate the convoluted Standings of EVE as a new player, having seen my Caldari standing plummit after a few Gallente missions. I have been reading everything I can get on standings and came up with a question I couldn't find awnsered anywhere else.

Will training my Social skill to lvl 5 gradually overcome the standing loss suffered from running missions, or is the loss always proportional to the gain.

Ex. at social lvl 0 running a non-faction mission for the amarr gives 1.050 standing gain but .525 loss to the minmatar. If I train social up will the loss go up in addition to the gain going up, or will only the gain increase?

It's proportional to the gain.

Social will only help with those factions you are positive with. Diplomacy will help with those you are negative with.

Faction standings aren't that easy to manipulate in your favor, particularly with missions. It also seems to me that you have corporation and faction standings confused from what I've read. Standard missions do not give you faction standings increase, only storyline missions will. Regular missions will give you corp and agent standing.

I'm also going to assume that you are running 'tag' missions, or missions against the caldari navy. These regular missions will absolutely tank your faction standing as each cadari navy ship you blow up will incur a faction standing penalty.

The only way to gain overall standings via missions is to 'trade' storyline missions for two opposing factions, like gallente and caldari. It is tedious and time consuming yes, but via standard missions, I am not aware of another way to gain faction standings.

I agree.

As others have mentioned, train Diplomacy to raise current negative standings. Social skill increases the amount of standing gained for completing missions.
