Orbit problem

I have my orbit set to 500M, but when I use it on rats the orbit sets at just under 1,500M. I'm hunting Battleships, but it happens vs. Cruisers as well. Optimal range on my guns is 825. Any hints?

slow down, you are going too fast. the ship's computer makes compromises between speed and orbit distance and tries to max speed and minimize orbit distance, typically you end up orbiting a little further out than what you select as an orbit distance.

Ah! Who knew a lowly afterburner would do that! Thank you.

Another option is to reset your Orbit distance closer to the target so your guns can stay at optimal range while keeping your Afterburner active.

Also you can train up skills and or fit modules that increase your Optimal range.

How are your guns actually hitting? A lot of them work out of optimal but in falloff as well.

There are also skills and modules and I think even rigs that improve your ship's agility as well.

Yes, train support skills. As an alpha the relevant skill is probably Trajectory Analysis, which improves your falloff and therefore even if not moving your optimal it still improves your DPS. Also train practically everything you can in Navigation section.

Alternatively, switch from blasters to railguns.

Alternatively, pulse your afterburner (cycle in, turn off, pause, cycle in, turn off, pause). However you should maintain high speed so that the enemy doesn't hit you hard, but if you're totally okay with tanking enemies it's all good.

Alternatively don't care about optimal and rely on having enough DPS from being still in falloff range.

Oh, I'm hitting them and killing them, but I figured if I was at optimal I could speed up the process. Thanks everyone for the help, all good information.
