How do I move my ships?

If I have a mining ship in one sector of space and a salvager elsewhere, what are the various methods by which I can move my salvager to be in the same area for easy switching?

Can I repackage my ship then transport it as cargo? Will I have to remove the fittings to do that?

You have a few options:

First off you can just fly it there yourself. Get in the ship and fly it there. You can fly there in your pod to pick it up if you don't have any expensive implants in, or you can use a free rookie ship to fly there and then just leave the rookie ship behind.

You can repackage the ship and move it there in the cargohold of a hauler ship. If you repackage a ship all of it's modules will be unfit and placed in your item hangar and your rigs will be permanently lost. Any insurance that you have on the ship will also be lost.

You can ship it there in the ship maintenance bay of a ship designed to carry other assembled and fully fit ships. To do this you will need to remove everything from your carghold that is not ammo. Ships that can do this are the bowhead or Orca in high sec or any of the carriers outside high sec and the Rorqual can but is limited to mining and hauling ships.

So am I right in saying that I can leave my current ship and fly out elsewhere in a pod, just like I would if my ship had been destroyed in battle? If so how do I do that? How do I switch to pod?

:-) There are so many little details to this game and I sometimes find that many in the community answer by effectively dumping an encyclopaedia on the desk and saying "It's in there!".

Sometimes I just need a simple question answered and you've done that well. Thank you. :-)

Depending on the ships you need to move many players keep shuttles around for this reason, packaged they will fit in the cargo hold of many of the ships in EvE. Even if they will not they are cheap enough that even new players can simply buy and sell them as needed with minimal ISK losses.

Another option not posted yet is to sell the ship instead of moving it. You will take an ISK loss doing this but sometimes it is easier that trying to move it.

If you are moving ships in high sec move one ship and then fly back in your pod to get the other is the easiest and generally the fastest way to deal with ship moves.

About 85% of the time the answer is to right click something.

Also adding to what ergherhdfgh said about the Corvette 'Rookie' ship. Docking while in your pod at any NPC station where you don't have any ships located will spawn the 'Rookie' ship for free.

As you get older in this game, your character may have implants installed and traveling around in your pod becomes a risky option. Using a 'Rookie' ship or, as Donnachadh advised, a shuttle is the best way to travel when moving ships.

To travel I like to use a frigate with a 5mn mwd and shield buffer in the mids, agility mods in the lows, and warp speed rigs. Gets you where you need to be nice and quick. Plus sometimes people get bored and take potshots at shuttles/pods in highsec.

And if you don't want to do it yourself, there is also the possibility to use a transport service like Red Frog/ Black frog or maybe your Alliance has such a service either.

It's bad practice to fly around in your pod, unless you are going from station to station within a single system (zero gate jumps). Even then, it's advisable to use a Rookie ship, shuttle, or frigate. The reason behind this is that you will have a "second chance" to jump away if anything happens to you and your Rookie ship/shuttle/frig gets killed.

Losing a pod will not only lose any expensive implants you may have plugged in, but it will also throw you back to your medical station....which could be tens of systems away, thus wasting time.

People can kill a pod with a single cycle of a smartbomb, or drones, or civilian weapons for that matter!

Although pods do have a sub 2 sec align time. So unless you are autopiloting (lol) there is no reason you should loose your pod in HS
