It would be nice to be able to turn off just the chat function in channels. Specifically Jita local. I'm sure it would help with server load too.

Guessing you don't live in nullsec... any nullsec player (at least any smart one) already has local in its own window. You could then simply minimize local chat if you don't want to see it.

Pretty much this. Just drag the local tab out of the chat bar and it'll seperate from your other chat windows, then just smash it. Keep it so you can still see a fair bit of the local side bar though, so if you happen to be at war, or in low/null you can see when people are coming in and out of the system your in.

To be honest, I've gone a step further. It's a bit annoying because the game client tries to protect me from myself (not complaining too loud because I've been known to do stupid things), but I drag the local window to the left border of the game until only the member list is visible. Every time I log on I have to drag it back over.

That's right... I never see local chat. Ever. Our alliance has a policy of not smack-talking in local, except in exceptional cases (or for congratulatory GFs when they're warranted), so why would I bother?

The sole reason for this is real estate... screen space is at a premium, and all I care about is whether there's a neut in local. Free intel is hard to pass up, even if it does make hunting me depend solely on my level of attentiveness.

Local should not exist anywhere but highsec. Free intel isn't a good thing.
