I'm a pure Amarr pilot looking to get into a NIghtmare in the near future. I have very limited shield skills (almost none) and was wondering what I need to make this ship shine? I would be using this for null sec blood ratting.

Not to be facetious, but pretty much all of them. Shield Operation, Upgrades. Tactical shield manipulation, all the compensations Emission systems etc. For real results all to at least 4 and 5 where needed for T2 modules.

If you are spending a billion isk on a ship best to up the tank.

Improved Passive Shield Tanking Cert would be a target to aim for.

For ratting you'll be using specific hardeners, which don't benefit from the compensation skills.

Shield comp skills = not worth it

as said already, you will want the shieldskills at 4 or five. more specifically

Shield compensation (2% shield booster bonus) 5
Shield management (5% shield capacity) 5
Shield operation (5% reduction in regeneration time) 5
Shield upgrades (5% reduced PG for extender etc) 5
Tactical Shield manipulation 4

o/c this also depends on wether you have an RR at hand or not. i.e. shield compensation could be 4 if you use an shield-transfering RR. Shield operation isn't essential with the NM since you won't fit an passive tank anyway, but it comes handy none the less. therefore, you can omit the 4 shield compensation skills as well (unless you want to fit faction modules. but then you'll need EM/Therm compensation at 5 to get similar bonuses as with active hardeners).

apart from the different tank, you will need all energy-management skills at 5 as well, since the NM is even more cap-hungry then the abaddon - but as an amarr-pilot you prolly have them at maximum anyways already.

then, t2 tachions (i.e. large beam laser spec 4).

and last but not least: both BS skills at 5 is almost mandatory for the NM to melt through sanctums like a hot knife through warm butter.

I'm gong to quibble on the first one. I almost exclusively shield tank, including a NM, and have never, ever found a situation where Shield Compensation is worth taking from 4 to 5. I know that doesn't cut a whole lot off, but it's something.

weeeeehl you know how it is with the question "what do I need to make [enter shipname] shine?". Of course may not need that 2%, but if you want a shiny NM with perfect skills and least worries, that 2% come in handy. however, if you want to argue the benefit of this (6 days worth of training), you practically can also question the role of shield operation. since you do not passive tank, regeneration-time of your shield is pretty insignificant and stuff, so in the end, you may not even take this to 5 as well.

I found that haveing all skills at 5 just makes me feel more... safe. or something similar. :)
