will make it easier to keep local chat readable

So, first off, it's a bad idea in general to allow users to put unrestricted regex into your systems.

Second, most users don't know Regex, so this would be a pretty niche feature.

And lastly, unless you're going to filter out (.*) then I don't think you're going to have much success improving Local. That's why everyone uses the various public and private chat channels to talk with each other.

I guess I'm not entirely sure what the regex standards are, but assuming it's the old DOS * and ? stuff, it could be semi-useful, I guess. There are only like 3 systems with a local channel where it even matters though, so I guess it's a question of upsides vs downsides and cost vs benefit. Since there's only like 3 channels where it has upsides that aren't being met by a simple block, and since there are thousands of scenarios where it'd cause more trouble than benefit, it's probably not the wisest course. Unless it's a super secret hidden feature with a sphinx guarding the button to keep out the riff raff. In which chase, it probably wouldn't be worth the dev time.

As a semi-regular practitioner of regex, I'd love to have this feature.

I'd assume you're talking about Jita local... if so you'd probably spend a lot less time removing scam-spam and generic retardation from local by closing the local channel. The amount of intelligent discussion that goes on there isn't zero, but you'd have to add a great deal of precision to the percentage of total to see anything more than zero.

If there ever comes a day where local no longer offers free intel, I expect that many players will simply throw it away and happily never look at it again.

You can already do this. You can shrink the text portion of the Local window to the point that you can't actually see any text. I keep it running the full height of my monitor over on the far right of my Eve client with the little bit that still shows the portraits of people who talk covered by other windows.

All the benefits of Local, none of the brain damage Blink
