adding commas to monetary value

One of the silliest mistakes anyone can make in this game is selling a item for too little or too much when they are a new player. Plus when you are distracted you make very silly mistakes. Such as selling a billion isk item for 9.99 million. One of the simplest ways to keep players from making a simple mistake is to add commas. Just like we were taught when we were kids. Changing 1000000.00 to 1,000,000.00. Much easier to glance at and see that it is one million.

Except some people use the comma like others use the decimal. It depends on where you are at.

You don't have to be silly or distracted to make silly mistakes. You just have to be new, and this is part of the process. Type in your base, and count, 1,2,3,4,5 zeroes... That's a millions figure. I just wish they could come up with a system to prevent stupid fits. I can't can't even begin to count how many stupid fittings I went through before I half-way figured out what might be a good fitting for something.

In other words, if you have enough isk that you're not even paying attention to the powers of 10? Well... Cry me a river, ya know? :P

This is actually a localization issue, primarily. While you were taught that 1,000 is One Thousand there are places in the world where that's One with three decimals of precision, and others where that 1,000 is basically nonsense. There's a great video on this and other localization issues on Youtube.

That said, I believe the game already does add commas, so long as you tab out of the box before hitting enter.

I am not crying a river. Im just thinking of ways that new players could learn the game much faster. For from what I have seen there is a HUGE player gap. You have the new players such as myself, and then you have the players that have been playing the game for roughly 10 years. This is one of the ways that new players may be able to understand the market. I say this because many players that fall in love with eve are incredibly smart. But each person learns things differently and can possibly make a mistake that could cost them millions.

I guess I should have named the post differently due to the fact of it may take more than commas to make the market more friendly to new players. There could be many ways of fixing this, but one of the easiest ways I could see is to fix this is having a option of where you could choose if you would like commas, periods or just the simple way with just the single period. Just In general apply to more players

You're right, OP. It's not such a big thing. It does, however, show up as a localized delimited value, when I switch fields.

Maybe just check the fields after you tab to the next? New players to this game have a hard time, yes. I'm pretty new, myself, compared to the long-time elites that seem to enjoy this board more than the game, so I would not feel too bad, were I you.

I was overly 'short.' My apologies.

why not just use apostrophe's?

1'000'000

the game is already localized in quite a few languages, I think a option in general settings for this wouldn't be too hard to implement

It is all good man, but while some players may like the combat aspect more and others may like the idea of being rich without the combat part as much, perhaps they have a busy schedule and can only play little amounts at a time. In combat you have to make sure you have time to spare. Wheres the market aspect can be more of a long term. Thats why it would be nice to see the market more forgiving to the new players.

That would be a nice solution to a easy fix. Avoiding all of the comma problems and such.

As someone that does a fair amount of buying and selling I would recommend always tabbing out of the isk value field. The UI will insert the commas for you and you shouldn't ever make a "missing zero" mistake. Having all warnings on as well will help protect from errors (often, but not always).

Just a few comments on how to combat the problem besides those already mentioned.

The calculators built into Windows and The Mac OS both add the appropriate deliminator based on the country etc chosen so entering numbers there and then copy paste them into EvE is one possibility.

A spread sheet could be used for this same thing, and all industrial players I know have one open all the time anyway.

Store the most often used numbers in the notepad in game and then copy paste them into the needed places. Just a few example to illustrate the idea.
1000 - 1 thousand
100000 - 100 thousand
1000000 - 1 million
Quick and easy to identify and grab the proper number.

No it is not the same as your request, yes it takes more time and makes for more key strokes and mouse clicks, but people have been asking for this change since the dawn of my EvE adventure and CCP still has not done anything about it so the more ideas you have to work around it the better chance you have of finding something that will work for you.

Other advantages to the methods listed above is you will never have to worry about pressing that button without tabbing out of the field first and for those complaining about small font sizes you can enter numbers in a spot where you have more control of font size and can see the numbers better.

And it's even dumber than the nation's that still use imperial.

If you have a system where 1,001 and 1,001 are two differant values Idk how things get done.

Beside even in the places where they do use commas like that they do not get confused when the comma is replaced by a decimal so that's not really an issue
