Your favourite and most disappointing games of 2011

Favorite: (Tie) Portal 2 / Eve: Crucible - Portal 2 may have been (somewhat) short, but had its good points. Crucible saved me from dropping online gaming altogether (for now - may still be possible but it would not be Eve's fault then).

Special Mention: SpaceChem (Steam). I enjoy poking at it now and then (plus will play on my notebook), but also was very fun to watch my roommate obsess over the thing for several months once he learned about it.

Disappointed: Eve: Incarna - No comment really.

Only dissapoints this year : Skyrim and Crysis 2

Found myself playing same old games Cry

But 2012 looks very promising - Arma 3 and Diablo 3

To be, or not to be, that's the question.

I would've expected more conversation about dark souls out of this thread since it's one of the few other brutal PvP video games out there...

Ah well..

I don't understand how you people can like Skyrim THAT much.

I played it and it was fun, but the story line was incredibly bland and boring (as the majority of fantasy is), the physics seemed even worse than oblivion. It also took itself way too seriously, there was almost no comedic dialogue at all. Combine that with a bland landscape and lack of diverse enemies.

THE INTERFACE IS HORRIBLE.

Although it was a decent game, I would say it was the most disappointing of 2011.

I should have just done another play through of New Vegas, it would have been more fun.

The storyline of every TES game is bland and boring.

Did you try just walking across the map, going in a random cave, and seeing what you find? That's where Skyrim and every other TES game shines

In all fairness, the lead developer was working on inserting comedic dialogue into the game, but then he took an arrow to the knee.

LOL @looking for a backstory into a TES game. It's like trying to look for a reason to exist in say TERRARIA.

TES worls have always been about exploration, finding that odd village or that strange spawn in the middle of nowhere, exploration and strange events. I still remember finding a corpse in the middle of nowhere in Morrowind with a special maximized jump spell on it and a note about the guy's discovery. That made my day. Lol

It's the little things and the random events happening in the wilderness. The Main story is just filler.

I don't understand how anyone can describe the landscape in Skyrim bland, its beautiful and surprisingly varied. From mountains to tundra, ice flows to marshes and it all "fits" together and seems like a feasible real world. Not many games pull that off. Skyrim wasn't amazing in technical terms the way something like Crysis is but aesthetically its superb.

Actually the guy fell from the sky literally... I was very disappointed when Oblivion started using a separate cell space for cities and so flight was removed.

Best game:

Eve-Online Crucible

Good games purchased this year:

Batman: Arkham City (I recommend!)
Bastion (great Indie game)
Dead Island
Dungeon Defenders (Good game to play to take break from eve or League of Legends. Recommend playing with friends!)
Portal 2
and many other games I cannot list atm

Bad game purchased this year:

Hm, so far Jamestown. I'm pretty careful when buying games. Unless they're uber cheap. Even if they were, I didn't even buy Duke Nukem Forever, lol.

Total games now owned in steam:

394, up from 383 before x-mas daily deals.

Best: Serious Sam 3 BFE. I've been jonesing for an old school shooter.

Worst: Sword of the Stars 2: Lords of Winter. Damn game was released in essentially an early alpha state in November. I'll never pre-order any game again, but fortunately, despite knowingly selling a grossly unfinished piece of software, Paradox, the publisher, had the decency to offer refunds.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

Uncharted 3 PS3

Worst:
Crysis 2 PC
Duke Nukem PC

Looking forward to:
GTA V
Crusader Kings 2
More BF DLC
Skyrim when it's had a good 6 months under its belt.
A Red Dead Redemption follow up though I'm not sure where they could go with it, one of the stand out games of the last couple of years for me.

Honourable mentions for oldies but goodies:
Grand Prix Legends PC
Quake III PC
GTR 2 PC
Assassins Creed PC, climbing to the top of the cathedral in Acre and taking in the view for the first time was a great gaming moment for me.
GTA Vice City, shooting hookers in the face to cheesey 80's power ballads never gets old.

Gutted about:
Diablo III DRM Sad
Mudkest
Contagious Goat Labs

Agree. Whoever thought 'press a button as onscreen shows you' was a good game method needs to be stamped on by all the gamers.
