I was adjusting some buy orders that I had up in Jita, and instead of putting in 1,101,000 I must have put it 11,101,000.

Anyway I ended up buying 5 of the item for 11 million a piece.

I know, I know. Dumbass of the month award.

Anyway, I wanna make sure I understand exactly what happened because as soon as I clicked "ok" the 5 items showed up in my hanger immediately.

Because my buy order was higher than sell orders did the Eve server automatically fill my buy order from sell orders? If thats the case though why wouldn't it fill my order from the lowest price sell order?

Granted, it was totally my mistake, but I don't see how I ended up paying 11mil for each item when sell orders were up for around 1.3mill.

I could understand if I put it up and a player picked my buy order and sold to it, but I got the items the second I hit "ok" on the buy order, so it had to have been an automatic transaction.

I spent 50 million ISK on this, help me learn from it at least. lol

Don't violence me bro!

As soon as you entered that buy order, it purchased from the lowest sell order in range at the price you entered. The system will let you pay more than the seller is asking if you enter that amount manually. So it looks like you just made that seller really happy.

There should have been a warning, saying something like "This order is X% higher than the regional average. Are you sure you want to place this order?" ... unless, of course, you turned it off. It can be kind of obnoxious to get that message sometimes, but it can also save your butt when you make a silly typo.

Chalk it up as a lesson learned.

Hmmm ok.

Kinda surprises me that if you put in a buy order higher than the lowest sell order that the server wouldn't just automatically fill it from the lowest sell order and return the extra ISK back to you.

I can't think of any good reason for the system to be set up so that you can actually pay more than the lowest sell order. Seems like it would make sense to just have it fill the buy order from the lowest sell orders and return the difference, because I'm sure this won't be the last time I make this mistake. =/

Oh and the message about the price being so much higher probably did pop up. I was just de-sensitized to it due to having entered a ton of orders today below market cost and having the same window pop up telling me that my buy order was so much lower than the average.

Don't violence me bro!

its because you are thinking of the eve market like a store. Its not.

When you set up an order you are giving the broker x amount of isk. the broker then goes and buys whatever it is you are looking for at that price.

I believe RL brokers pocket the difference as part of their income.

One constant bit of advice I have for people interacting with the market, in essence my number one rule, is always press TAB after entering a price.

Always hit tab.
Tab is your friend.

One of the funniest quirks is that it always fills it from the lowest sell order, too.

So, let's say there's a sell order at 10k ISK, and one at 12k ISK. If you right click the 12k ISK sell order, and choose buy, you will get a buy order prompt with 12k ISK filled in. But when you go to buy, 12k ISK is transferred to the guy with the 10k ISK sell order. It's pretty funny, have the lowest sell order long enough and you'll see people buying from you above your sell order price :)

The problem you mentioned is the main source of loosing money for a trader. A single typo can make you loose billions. It happens on buying and selling side.

I've lost 2.3 bill last week just due to the GUI wasn't fast enough to recognize my first digit. So I've sold a bunch of PLEXes via sell order for 50 mil instead of 450. The warning popped up as it happens very often if your're speculating, was in hurry and missed to double check percentage and total value and whoops...

I would also like to see a change that all buy and sell orders are traded with the price as defined for the order...

Haha yeah, this happened to me recently. I was selling PLEXes at the regular price, and some guy (who probably didn't sort the list by price) bought one for 550M. Quickest 100M profit I've ever made.
