Spider tanking and drones / fighters

When I first played EVE (2011), I read about it first, to figure out want I wanted. And it seemed drones gave the best bang for your buck, and required the least micro-management. Also, I think the whole idea about orbiting spaceships at close range is probably less realistic than warp drives, or a max speed in space. It gave me a headache. But I digress.

The last time I played EVE (three years ago), I joined a Dutch newbie corps. It was fun at first, but while most of them were Gallente, they had chosen it for the blasters: maximum damage. A good Vexor / Dominix fit for them was: the shortest ranged blasters with the most damage in all the high slots, an active armor tank and tackle. Everything else was optional.

They ridiculed my long-range sniper drone setups.

The second favorite was, of course a Rifter. Those, in the cheap, short range tackle setup were reimbursed. And what they liked best was gate camping in such a setup.

One of the first things we did, was a rookie contest: multiple teams of 5 persons, all with a Velator fitted with T1 however they wanted.

So, I suggested the following fit to my team:

[Velator, Velator]
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I

5MN Microwarpdrive I

Civilian Light Electron Blaster (or remote repairer)
Drone Link Augmentor I

Hobgoblin I x2

And, a remote repairer for the people who had enough skill to fit it instead of the Civilian Blaster, which turned out to be 4 out of 5.

Kiting, spider tanking and drones FTW!!!

Well, we totally annihilated the 7 or 8 other teams. It was totally no contest. I am not sure if it was to be best out of three from the start, but that was what happened. And the second time, our team was primary for all the other teams. But even so, and thanks to my loyal team, I was one of the last survivors.

Because, that's what spider tanking is all about. We were all repping each other. And the other teams weren't coordinated enough to focus fire on just one of us. While we focussed all our drones on just one enemy.

Well, the third time, I was primary for all the other teams, so I was one of the first to go down. Then they killed the rest of the team, and had a lot of fun doing all kinds of uncoordinated 1-on-1 PvP for a while.

We didn't get a prize, as it was the wrong thing to learn: good PvP is short-range orbiting.

A few days later, we were war-decked. And we were in over our head. We were decimated. Stay docked!

Ok, they asked us what special assets we had, and they asked me to take out my Blackbird to scramble the enemy. That allowed the others to get in close orbit with their Rifter / Trasher and unload. But still, we lost a lot of ships. And me fitting a ship for logistics was frowned upon. The brass didn't see the need.

So, I bugged them about spider tanking. And after a while, they became irritated with that and threw me out. It happens.

Anyway, I was wondering how common this is. From what I read: very, although the larger groups want ECM and logistics, and the power blocks mostly agree with my reasoning.
